Over charged on tax preparation? Do I have to accept forms and pay?
I took our tax stuff to H&R Block - basic house hold, under 30,000 with a few intrest & dividen forms. I don't think he did a good job and I am supposed to go back with one more piece of information. He told me it would cost $295. I thought this was a bit much. Since I have not recieved any paper work, not signed any agreement nor completed the process; do I still have to accept the tax preperatiion and pay him or can I just take my toys and go home?

- to be honest im anti-HR Block but regardless of that I would still run. You are better off doing the return yourself and consulting the IRS website for help if necessary if all you have is a basic return plus interest. If you really feel the need, there is a program you can download called TaxAct2005 which is free and only $19.95 i think if you want to e-file but you can avoid that by printing out the return and mailing it.
- No you do not have to pay. You can just tell them that that is a bit much and you would like to go elsewhere. Get your stuff back and go someplace else. I hope you do go some where else!!
- Yes you can. Ask them for the paperwork back and go somewhere else. You might want to ask the next office you go to for a ballpark figure on how much it would cost. But be careful with places that charge you a low fee, it just might be too good to be true.
