Tax preparation services comparison?

Hello. Where can I get an estimate (ballpark) of how much I might get charged for tax preparation at H&R Block and Jackson-Hewitt? I live in the Chicagoland area and own 2 properties (TX and IL). I have some donations and moving expenses from TX to IL. Married w/1 child under 18. During 2006, I had income in both TX and IL. Thanks!

  1. The only way you'll get any sort of estimate is to ask the individual preparer. Quotes will vary from one office to the next even within a chain. It's usually based on the amount of time that it takes to prepare your return. Since yours is more complex than typical, it will cost you more than a single W2 wage earner would pay.
  2. H&R block and turbo tax will let you do all of the "paper work" on line and will even give you the bottom line for free they charge you to print or file of course. I do our taxes on each one to double check then I use the one that is the least expensive to file. This year HR Block was cheaper by 5.00
  3. You will have to call each firm and get a ballpark figure. Also, if you use one of these firms make sure you are getting a preparer that has some experience. You do not want a person doing your taxes that has not had much experience. You might try calling a couple of small CPA tax firms in the area to see if their fees are comparable.
  4. I dunno about Jackson Hewitt but H&R Block offers a free billing estimate service. You have to take your tax documents down to an office and let them see what you have before they'll quote you a price. Based on comparisions I've done for work reasons, H&R Block is cheaper in my area.
  5. I worked for JH for several years. If you are itemizing with 2 business properties, moving expenses, and charitable deductions, with one State (because TX doesn't have State Income tax), without any bank products, prep only; about 220.00. If you gripe enough, you can get a discount, and if you go on-line they have down-loadable coupons, and accept competitors coupons. Also, you can check with National Association of Tax Professionals NATP, they will give referrals of members in your area-some of these pros work for places like Block or JH. good luck & bless
