Tax Question - Company In Texas - Worked 6 months in Pennsylvania?

I worked for a consulting company in Texas and they got me contract work in Pennsylvania. I worked 6 months in PA and came back to Texas. I got my W2 . In my W2, the State is mentioned as Texas and since Texas has no state taxes , the boxes with State wages [16], State income tax[17] are empty. Further more my company has also listed my address as a houston,Texas address and not my Pennsylvania address. So on my W2- there is no mention of Pennsylvania. My question is do I need to file taxes with PA because I resided and worked in PA. Thanks in advance Thanks for your responses. I currently resigned from that company and am working for a new company and am residing in Delaware.

  1. You did not mention where you claim your residence. Are you now residing in Texas? If the wages were paid in Texas, there is no state tax due, and that's likely the case here. Personally I would not file in PA since the wages were paid to a Texas resident since that is your home of record. You just happened to be doing work for a company in another state for a period of time.
  2. If you got a W-2 from the company in Texas, and your residence is Texas, but you just worked physically in PA but for the TX company, then you don't have to file in PA.
  3. Pennsylvania has authority to tax any income earned there, regardless of the person's residency. So, unless PA exempts the income earned by nonresidents, you would have to file. Your TX company should have withheld taxes as required by PA. Since they didn't, you will have to pay any taxes you owe to the state directly.
