Can TurboTax appropriately calculate multiple-state income tax liability?
For the first time this year, I had to work significant amounts of time outside my home state. I have been using TurboTax to prepare my returns for several years, but I have only been required to file my federal return, and my Virginia tax return. This year, I must apportion my tax liability at the state level between California and Virginia. If I purchase both the Virginia and California state TurboTax software modules, will the program correctly calculate the state liability for both states? Please, if you have not filed in multiple states and apportioned your days worked during the year, and if you have not personally utilized TurboTax to file your returns in this situation, do not reply to the question. I am looking for definitive answers, not opinion or speculation. Thank you.

- Yes, thats what the commerical says. Look on turbotax.com for all the facts.
- Yes the program will do that well. You should get the pro version and order both states. i have not seen this years version but normally you do your home state first followed by the second state.
- I have used Turbo Tax (CD version bought at the store) and most recently Turbo Tax online. I find myself in the same situation this year with income from Michigan and Indiana. I am using turbo tax online and it picks out the right state tax forms for you to file, and also gives you a section to fill out what you have made in each state. The only question I would have for you would be did the state that is not your home state hold state taxes. The reason I ask is because last year my husband worked in Indiana and also lived there during the week, but because his resident address was in Michigan his employer did not hold out taxes. We did not have to file Indiana taxes, but did have to file Michigan since this was his legal address. Now this year we have multiple state incomes and turbo tax online has still worked great. The online version is in most cases cheaper also.
