income taxes help

virginia state income tax...overwhelmed!!!?

no lectures please... I owe $2300. because I didn't file my taxes (state). I didn't file them because I couldn't figure it out for myself and couldn't afford to pay someone to do it for me... what are my options? when they file for you does it include my deductions? (head of household and my son) I know I will need to set up a payment plan...but before I do that I would like to see if I have any room to lower the total amount owed... ...actually Virginia State Taxes are extremely complicated...unfortunately I was not able to figure it out (I am college educated and have been filing taxes for 16 years...I am fairly new to VA, hence my first filing) As for H&R Block or Turbo Tax...yes, I was that cash poor and couldn't afford it.

  1. Iy costs very very little to get H&R Block or someone to do your taxes. Either go pay them, or just buy Turbo Tax. Or sit down and read the instructions. They are step by step and tell you exactly what to put in each box and what math to do. It's not very tough. Just suck it up and get it done.
  2. The state has probably given you the worst deal possible. You need to file a correct return. When I prepared a VA state return for one of my client, I found, like another poster noted, they were more complicated that other states returns.
  3. The State of Virginia figured your taxes giving you no tax breaks of any kind, and perhaps not even figuring your withholding. If you feel you cannot go to a professional tax prep place to get them done, go buy yourself a good software package that has Virginia for the relevant years. Once you have the federal return done, the state returns are not so overwhelming.
