If Federal and State taxes were eliminated in the U.S., how would the country support itself?

I know that income tax did not exist until the early 20th century, and without taxing all the goods we buy, how would the U.S. support itself? Where would our revenue come from? People are always claiming that the IRS and all taxes are illegal, so I need to know what we would do without taxes to support our country.

1. tariffs... they taxed imports and exports.... there wasn't social security, big military, massive national debt, market capitalism, welfare, public roads, ... hell lots of stuff that the gov't supports. its a different time now. its not illegal.. it wasn't in the founding father's plans tho.
2. There are many ways where our revenue comes in. Without tax, the Fed may raise the prices of things compare to the actual cost. Take milk for example, nowadays it's about 3 dollar per galloon.. if there were no taxes, they may as well raise the price of the milk to 3. 50 or whatever. This is just a suggestion and not sure if that will ever happen. Its just a thought!
3. federal and state taxes are needed because the government is the largest employer of ineffiecient people. the people will step in and provide the services.
