income taxes help

State income tax question. I lived in three states in 2006...?

I lived in three states in 2006 (one without state income tax), can tax filing software handle this situation? I lived in one state for three months (my "home" state) and my work promoted me to a position in another state. This second state did not have a state income tax. I was here for six months and had my vehicle registered in this state and my driver license and voter registration in that state. We were not happy there, so we moved again and spent the last three months of 2006 in a third state, where we are currently living. My taxes are otherwise straightforward (I am not a homeowner). Is tax filing software programed to sort out these types of issues? Does anyone know if I will need to pay state income tax in my current state (IL) on my wages from the previous two states? I did not have state income tax withheld for six months of 2006 while in the state without state income taxes.

  1. You don't have to file in Texas, but you need to see an accountant because there are individual credits for each state...depending on which other two you lived in.
  2. you file seperate state tax returns for those states that require sate income tax. You'll have to pay extra for the tax software but it can handle it. moving expenses are deductable if your company didn't pay for it.
