Does a California resident living and working in Nevada pay CA state income taxes?
I just got a letter from the CA tax board saying I owe $1600 in state income tax for 2006, and that I failed to file by the due date. However I lived, worked and went to university in Nevada during the entirety of 2006. I was a CA resident the whole time, so do I really owe the money or is it a mistake?

- Yes, unless you are in the military!
- CA (like most states) taxes the world wide income of its residents. If you were legally a resident of CA while working in NV, then you owe CA state income tax for your NV earnings.
- If California was your permanent home while you were away at school in Nevada, you owe California state income tax on your Nevada income.
- Calif residents pay income tax on all their income regardless of source in 2006 you should have file a non resident return on your Nev. income but if you had bank accounts, a license registration and other ties to Calif. you would be considered CAlif. resident and yes, they will tax you
