Should we combine NYC and New Jersey?
If you're from upstate New York then you know that we pay a ridiculous amount of taxes and way too much for real estate to support the black hole known as NYC! We pay subway taxes in upstate NY where NO subway even exists. Other states are making their moves, such as California proposing to divide up into 4 separate states and Texas wanting to secede from the union, so who else thinks that Upstate NY should be it's own state, because we would do SOO much better economically if we were, and that NYC and New Jersey should just be combined into one state?

- You know that if half the population of the state is in NYC, then half the revenue (including sales taxes and income taxes) also comes from there, right? The tax equation has two sides. Do you really want to take NYC's income and sales taxes out of the revenue of New York State?
- And what makes you think that NYC real estate taxes are any better? If anything, they're probably HIGHER in NYC than what you pay upstate. Sales tax, too, is higher in NYC than upstate. The subway is run by the Port Authority of New York (State), so that's a statewide financial responsibility. You probably have some services upstate, like Fish + Wildlife, State Parks, etc. that are similiarly funded, which we in NYC also help subsidize and don't need. Niagara Falls is probably maintained by NY State - why are my taxes helping with the upkeep of that state facility, when I rarely visit it? Because it's all part of the same state, and state services are funded by all state residents, that's just the way it is. Maybe your house is too large, you could decrease your real estate taxes by living in a small apartment, like savvy city folk do.
