Which states have high income tax and low taxes on everything else?
Which states have high income taxes and low sales taxes, property taxes and so on? Better to pay on income than the rest. At least it's out in the open so they can't give us hidden tax increases.

- There is a state that has zero income tax and zero sales tax, Alaska. They get their money from taxes on the oil companies. Some parts of Alaska are not even totally frigid, although no one would confuse them with Florida. Some states that have high income taxes also have high property tax and high sales tax (California comes to mind here, but there are others) so your assumption doesn't apply. (Property taxes are county controlled)
- Minnesota. - - - taxes are high. But two things..... 1) Benefits galore to live there. Parade magazine does a yearly study of all 50 states. Minnesota consistenty ranks #1, 2) The current govenor (Pawlenty) told the state's congress that if they raised any taxes, that he'd veto any such move. p.s.: Minnesota congress raised taxes AND Govenor Pawlenty vetoed the proposal. Taxes will not rise, as in most other states. Minnesota is #1 according to AAA, Travel, and Parade, and in a recent New York Times newpaper article. .
- Delaware has no sales tax and a very low property tax, as the state picks up the tab for most school district expenditures. The property tax on a $100k is only around $200 per year. Plus income tax isn't high compared to neighboring Maryland and Pennsylvania. How. First corporation expenses pay a good chunk of state income. Same goes for bank incorporation fees. Plus taxes on the state's three casinos pay over 5% of the state's budget. Unlike other states, lottery proceeds go into the state general fund.
- You are making an assumption that if a state heavily taxes success (high income tax) that they would NOT heavily tax everything else. Faulty assumption. Generally, the higher the income tax, the higher all the other taxes as NO government can contain itself. Michigan has a mid level income tax, incredibly high property taxes, a 6% sales tax AND we are one of a handful of states that charge full sales tax on utilities AND gasoline (we pay sales tax ON tax). If you are looking for a lower cost of living, avoid any state that taxes success highly because those costs are always recouped through the lowest paid citizen.
