- gasoline tax, sales tax, social security, cigarette tax, alcohol tax, vehicle tax, etc. gasoline tax, 20% sales tax, 9% social security, 9% (your employer also pays 9% on your behalf.) cigarette tax, 200% alcohol tax, 50% ??? vehicle tax, 5% etc. so it's 9%+9% ss + all the others. for sales, it's 9%+9%+9% you earned $100. your employer paid 9% ss you paid 9% ss you got $82 you bought something for for $75 and paid $7 tax and have a quarter left. no income tax at all, and you're already down 25% even for food, w/ no income tax, you're down 9%+9% = 18% for gasoline, you're down considerably more than just sales tax. keep that in mind when you hear Steve Forbes talk about a flat tax. also keep in mind, he doesn't pay social security. or a lot of the other taxes. and he complains about how hard it is for him to get along on his multi-million $ income.
