Employer state id missing from w2?

Hi I work for NJ based consulting company. In 2008 I worked whole year in VA but when I got W2 its has two states in it One is VA and another one is NJ. NJ has employer state id with state wages BUT no state income tax VA don’t have employer state id but HAVE state wages and state income tax. My questions are 1)Can I file VA tax without employer state id. 2)There is $ 4000 difference in VA and NJ state wages (W2 column number 16) but W2 column number reflect VA wages only why? 3)How can I proceed to file my taxes? Sorry if its very basic question for Gurus.

  1. Prepare your federal return first, then the state. Some figures are pulled from the federal return. It would be better to have the VA EIN, but just match what is provided on the W-2. If you are using a tax software package or web site, it should ask you if the EIN is available, but should allow you to proceed if you answer no. The NJ information is irrelevant, unless you worked in NJ, during the tax year.
