can i deduct state tax and sales tax if from different states?
i live and work primarily in texas. texas has no state income tax. last year i worked in california and had states taxes deducted from my paycheck. i was there for about 8 months while my wife lived and worked in texas the entire time. can i take the std sales deduction and the state income tax deduction? i am using taxcut and it seems like it can be either but not both. thanks. joel

- No. You are not allowed to deduct any sales tax for a year for which you deduct any state income tax. You are not allowed to deduct any state income tax for a year for which you deduct any sales tax. You may either (a) deduct California income tax, or (b) deduct both Texas sales tax and California sales tax. You are not allowed to deduct California income tax and Texas sales tax for the same year.
