Has anyone had experience with H&R Block for tax preparation?

My long-time accountant has relocated to another state & I received a $25 off coupon for H&R Block (plus they are close to my apartment). Anyone have good/bad experiences with them? This would be for a standard , middle-class, married (2 kids) filing jointly return.

  1. They are fine as long as you get an experienced preparer. Many Block preparers know as much if not more than any CPA out there but there are always a few "newbies" sprinkled in every office who are still learning.
  2. My experiences with the store-front tax prep mills has been less than stellar. However most of what I do is undo other people's screw-ups. Most folks can DIY with tax prep software, either on-line or out-of-box. If your income is less than about $54k, you can do them for free through the IRS' Free E-File link on their home page. If you had a good relationship with your accountant and wish to continue with that type of service, ask him or her for a local referral.
  3. H&RBlock has a policy that guarantees their service. They also have a satisfaction guarantee. If you are not satisfied, after they have completed your tax return, you do not have to use the service. Ask for an experienced preparer. 4. If you only have standard deductions and nothing complicated, just do it yourself for free online. turbotax.com is good.
  5. A close relative of mine previously both trained and worked with H&R block. The pay was lousy, and they limited the tax preparation skills which he was allowed to learn and perform. Luckily, only the dullest, laziest and greediest of people came to his H&R Block storefront so that his skills were not challenged. He told me that it cost an average of $75 to do a simple, straight-forward return. TurboTax only cost $50, it asks you all the guiding questions, and can read the previous year's return if it was done in TurboTax.
