Do tax preparation agencies such as H&R Block charge for their services according to the refund?
I recently filed my taxes with them and they charged me $360.75 for a $6000 refund now I'm hearing people tell me that was way too much, can I report them? or stop the process all together? I feel so violated and stupid help!!

- No - these agencies charge based on the complexity of the tax return.
- No you are charged for each form you have them fill out for you. You also have to remember they are a business with bills and employees to pay.
- Report them? For what? They provided a service, and charged you for it. No the fee doesn't depend on the refund, it depends on how many forms they have to process. And without knowing anything about your return, there's no way to say whether it was high or not. If you had one W-2 and filed a 1040EZ it would be sky-high. If you had a more complicated return, maybe itemized and had a few types of credits, it's probably not an unexpected charge. And did you take some kind of instant or few day refund, which is really a very expensive loan? Not sure what you mean by stopping the process. If they've already filed, then it's over.
- H&R Block does not charge according to refund. They charge according to the complexity of the return. Other charges also apply if you add things such as Peace of Mind or Rapid Refund. Though expensive, your charge is typical.
- You don't have to use their services, you can always do your taxes yourself.
- It is illegal to charge based on the refund. You paid it. Next time perhaps ask what the fee is before you start. Helen, EA in PA
