Do I have to pay federal taxes?

I am 17 years old and at my job i was exempt of paying federal taxes and when I got my W-2's it said I would be getting nothing back since my federal income tax was with held. I tried to file them anyway to see if I was eligible for the stimulus check or whatever it is called and it stated that I owe 90 some dollars to federal or whatever. I only made $6396.10 at the job and I heard if you made under $8750 you do not have to pay federal. If someone could give me some more information and show me where they got it from I would be very appreciated. I live in Maryland by the way if you need to know.

  1. If you claim yourself as an "exemption" you shouldn't have had to pay tax, but apparently your parents can...which means you can't...so yes, you have to pay taxes. Sorry.
  2. You can make up to $8950 actually without paying any taxes unless you are a dependent of somebody else, then it is $5450. So you are paying taxes on income over $5450. Since you claimed exempt (you are not), they took out no tax, so now you owe 10% tax on what you made over $5450, which comes out to the $90. File a new W-4 claiming single and one or zero, because you are not exempt.
  3. wow i have no idea but you could Try asking an IRS agent. i also make under $8750 and would like to know because there are still taxing me
  4. You were not exempt, unless your so stated on your W-4. You likely wouldn't qualify for the stimulus sine you can be claimed as a dependent. Look at the tax tables as well as for 1040-EZ
  5. look at the w2 ,did you have withholding? if you were exempt probably not. you can still file a form. you are also claimed on your parents return did you do that box. also if you are claimed on your parents return you can't check the yourself box in dependents.
  6. Yes you will owe taxes on your earnings in excess of $5450 since your parents are more than likely still claiming you as a dependent. Display with IRS web page below and go to page 6 of the PDF file. That page explains under what circumstances you are required to file. See Chart B at the bottom of the page for info apllicable to you.
