I live in Illinois but work in Missouri. Where do I file state income tax?

I don't have to pay double the state taxes do I ?

  1. If you are present in a state, then any income earned during this period, must be reported to the state. To your resident state, you must report your worldwide income for the year. 2. You will have to file tax returns in both Illinois and Missouri, but the tax you paid to Missouri would be deducted from any tax you owe Illinois. You don't pay double tax.
  3. No you pay where your primary listed residence is. So you main house is where you pay.
  4. You file an Illinois RESIDENT income tax return and a MISSOURI NON_RESIDENT income tax return. And yes, you get a credit for taxes paid to another state, generally. You do not pay double the tax. Turbo Tax and other tax prep programs all handle these situations quite well.
