income taxes help

On your income tax, can you deduct the taxes paid on gasoline taxes?

For example, in the state of Texas. You pay 38.4 cents tax on every gallon of gas. It seems like I should be able to deduct all that money that I used to pay for gas taxes throughout the year from my taxable income.

  1. No, gasoline tax is not one of the taxes you can deduct as an itemized deductions.
  2. IRS Pub 17 page 149 says, "You cannot deduct federal excise taxes, such as tax on gasoline, that are not expenses of your trade or business"
  3. Hi! The only way to take a deduction for gasoline taxes is if you have a business and that business uses vehicles that use gasoline off road, such as construction or farming. The tax on gasoline is a road tax and if you don't use the gasoline in a vehicle that travels over the roads you can then take a deduction for it. Otherwise there isn't anything that you can do. Hope this helps.
