do all US citizens uses IRS 1040 form to file for taxes?
my parents file their taxes every year by going to a person that help people file their taxes. And this year i am filing fafsa for the first time and it ask my parents information that is on the irs 1040 form. But my parents are going to file for their taxes for this year until mid february because they are waiting for their W-2 then they going to the same person that help them file for their taxes every year. so my question is does that person that help my parents fill out their taxes will he also fill out an irs 1040 for for my parents and will it have all of my parents on it because i need it for a section on fafsa. If he does fill out an irs 1040 form will my parents get a copy of the irs 1040 form for their records because i need an 1040 form to help me filled out a section on my parents income because on fafsa they will ask for information on my parent's 1040 forms. if parents don't get a copy of their 1040 forms from that person for their record can my parents ask that person for a copy of the irs 1040 form with all their information on it

- Yes they are going to use the 1040. The preparer will give them a copy for their records.
- I went through this for years with my two sons. Generally, when someone prepares your taxes, you get a copy of the completed 1040 form, along with copies of the W2s. If you've seen the FAFSA form, they tell you exactly what numbers they want from the tax form. I mean, they tell you "line #27" or whatever. Once you have the tax form done, it's very easy to complete the FAFSA. Don't worry.
- Well if i were you i would go with my parents when they file so you could get information from their preparer so you and your parents know what you need to do while filing.
- The person who does your parent's taxes is required by the IRS to give the parents a complete copy for their records. The IRS says filers should keep copies for at least 3 years, so your parents should get a copy.
- Yes, US citizens use some form of Form 1040 (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, etc) You will need a copy of your parent's last filed 1040. It may be last years or this years (with extension, your parents aren't required to file until October 15). Your parents should have a copy of it. If not, they can get one from their tax preparer or, for a fee from the IRS (Form 4506) (Note: check if a transcript is OK, that doesn't need a fee, Form 4506-T)
- You parents shouldn't have to 'ask' for a copy. It is their legal right to get one anyways. You can go to fafsa.gov and click on their FAQ's regarding estimating if you don't know the exact dollar amount.
