income taxes help

Is deviated septum surgery tax deductible on federal income taxes?

I had surgery to fix my deviated septum. Can I deduct this expense on my federal income taxes? I got the surgery for breathing function and for appearance. How could I seperate the two since it is all in one procedure?

  1. I believe so, because my friend deducted their eye surgery, and that was an elective surgery.
  2. The amount of medical expenses that you have that exceed 7.5% of your income are deductible on your itemized deducations (Schedule A) If ALL your deductions added together are less than the Standard Deduction for your filing status, you'd be better off not itemizing. Add it all up and see.
  3. if this surgery is required and you can prove this in writing from a dr., the expense would be eligible to claim as a deduction. if it was more for cosmetic purposes (i.e. nose job), then no, its not a medical deduction. in order for medical expenses to be deducted, they have to exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). so if your AGI is $40,000, then youd have to have medical expenses of over $3,000 in order for them to be deductible. only the amount over $3,000 can be claimed. you also would have to be able to itemize your deductions on schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. you'd have to see which way is more beneficial for you to file.
