income taxes help

Can you claim gas receipts when you file your income taxes?

I heard last year that you could save your gas receipts throughout the year and file them on your income taxes and get money back on it. Is this true? If so, how much percentage of it do you actually get back?

  1. Only if it's for business purposes. Not to go back and forth to work only.
  2. For personal use, auto expenses are non-deductible. However, Self-Employed individuals are able to deduct either the raw cost of auto expenses or a standard mileage rate for the business use of their car. If you are employed and not reimbursed for auto expenses you can take car expenses but then that is a Schedule A item subject to a 2% AGI Floor provided you can itemize in the first place.
  3. If you itemize you can deduct the higher of your state tax refund or the sales tax you paid throughout the year. If you saved all your receipts throughout the year then add up all the taxes you paid take the deduction of whichever is higher. If you take the state income refund and you file next year the state refund is taxable. The sales tax is not.
