A collection agency claims I owe Virgina state income tax-1987?

This is the first I have heard about a problem. I don't have my records back to 1987 and don't live in Virginia any longer. What recourse do they have?

  1. You could ask the collection agency to prove you owe what they say you owe. The 20 year statute of limitations may well have expired. http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+58.1-1802.1
  2. sounds a scam to me...but might want to drill the collection agency with questions till your satifisfied....
  3. Tell them to provide Verification of Debt. Odds are you'll never hear another word from them.
  4. Why not call the Virginia State tax people and ask if this is a scam or not
  5. I agree with the first answerer. Ask them to prove it. However, in saying that, it won't always work out that they will. Case in point, I got a call from a collections agency claiming I owed medical bills for a visit a while back. I told them I didn't know what bill they were referencing and to send me a statement with a summary of services. They refused, continued to come after me for money to the point that I and even my parents were receiving at least 5 phone calls a day. I called the hospital they said I owed and their records showed that I had paid in full. Now I have this stuck on my credit report with the agency refusing to take it off, and am stuck with it till the 7yr period is over. So, in short, collection agencies are horrible, and I am going to watch the other answers to see what advice they give you.
