- irs.gov has a list of locations in your city, state offereing free, in-person tax assistance and e-file (VISTA volunteers, etc.).
- Something is not right here. When the IRS garnishes paychecks for past due taxes, they provide the employer with paperwork that the employer is supposed to give to you. In this paperwork is a questionnaire and worksheet where you list your living expenses among other things. The IRS allows you basic housing and transportation expenses. My experience is that most states work the same way. In fact, I have yet to encounter a state that didn't follow the IRS guidelines to some extent, but that doesn't mean some state ignores the guidelines. Did you receive the paperwork from your employer? If you did, did you complete it and turn it in per the instructions? If you never received the paperwork, you need to talk to your HR department and find out where it is. If they are not helpful, you need to contact the IRS and the state taxing agency ASAP and explain that you never received any garnishment paperwork from your employer. Sometimes, you can do everything over the phone depending on your circumstances. You may need to enlist the help of a tax professional.
