Need my tax forms, can the IRS help me?
Okay here is the issue. I have to apply for fin aid at my University and I do not have my income tax papers and I can't get ahold of my preparer which I think she may have copies. I need them and is there a way I can get the IRS to send me the forms? God, I doubt it, but I need them, because I am such a procrastinator and have put it off for far too long!

- You can - see http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc156.html - the problem will be that 2008 most likely isn't available yet. A transcript will work for what you need, you don't have to pay the $39 to get an actual copy
- Call 1-800-829-0922 and they can mail it to you. If you have fax machine at home, it can be faxed to you. The current year IS available if the return has been processed.
- Contact IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to request a transcript, it is a line by transcript of what was filed on your tax return. It is FREE. Getting hold of your tax preparer and getting a copy of your return is not proof of filing. The Financial Aid wants proof of filing and earning income, that is provided in the transcript. Visit your local IRS office and request the transcript because call the 1-800-829-1040 you will be on hold for at least an hour, or you can try the balance due department 1-800-829-0922 but they may not send it to you because they only work balance due cases. If you prefer you can download the form 4506-T from the IRS website and mail to appropriate address or fax to appropriate fax number, they will provide it in 20-30 days.
