income taxes help

Why is my IRS direct deposit amount different than the amount I filed for?

The amount overpaid on my filed taxes was $1673. That is the amount that should have been direct deposited into my bank account, but the IRS only made a direct deposit for $672. Any reason why this would be different and where the rest of my money is? When I log in to "check status" on the IRS site it accepts the $1673 as the login confirmation, so I know they recieved it like that.

  1. When your tax return is received, they check your calculations. It is possible they found an error, or disqualified you for one of the rebates or credits you applied for. If you are confused, call and ask.
  2. Did you do a rapid refund loan? Did you have earned income credit? it may be because you're earned income credit was higher than you regular tax refund and they will deposit it as a seperate refund. Or the IRS may have found something like back child support or unpaid student loans and it may take them a couple of days for the paperwork to catch up on the computer.
  3. IRS does their own calculations before sending you a refund check. If your arithmetic (or 'rithmetic') may not bee right. All the more reason to use software or online filing - these services does the calculations for you!
  4. Was one of your dependents 17? If so, they weren't eleigble for the child tax credit. At any rate, a letter will follow soon.
  5. Don't go to HSBC, jackson-hewritt or block. They did your taxes wrong AND charged you for a RAL with an outrageous annualized interest rate when you figure in all the fees and bank fees. If the IRS website is not working, call 1-800-829-1954 and you may be able to find out. Good luck
  6. The only way to find out is to call IRS at 1-800-829-1954 or 1-800-829-1040. Did you have an outstanding debt with IRS or child support? if you did then your refund was offset.
