Are real estate classes tax deductable in the Educational deductions for Federal Income Taxes?

For 2007 are real estate classes deductable?

  1. Only if it is classes required for you to obtain or maintain your real estate license. And it probably belongs in the business deductions.
  2. Cost for education (tuition for classes, books, etc.) are only deductible as an unreimbursed employee business expense if the education is necessary for your current occupation. If you are already a real estate agent, then the classes are deductible. If the education is for a new job/career in a line of work that you are not currently in, then it is not deductible. So if you are a student/car salesman/work in retail/secretary (you know what I mean) and you are taking real estate classes so you can take the license exam to be a licensed agent, then it is not deductible.
  3. Once you are a real estate agent, you can deduct education needed to either improve your skills or maintain your license. You cannot deduct courses to obtain a real estate license, as costs of training for a new career are not deductible.
