New Property and Taxes?
We bought a small house and some property in Northern New York last year. We are billed quarterly for our local and school taxes based on our assessment, but I was curious about something else - A few (perhaps misinformed) friends did a lot of talking about "Oh, what about your state real estate taxes?" Honestly, I think they were full of it. I haven't heard a word from the state. My impression is that my local tax district handles assesses the taxes and collects them, period. Yes?

- you are correct. i work for New York State in the office of property taxes. New York State does not collect taxes. None of your taxes go to the state. it is all local tax for your town and school.
- i agree with sunny
- Im from England so im afraid I cant help on that one, also I dont own my own property sorry I cant help?!
- Your friends are indeed full of it. Local tax assessment is done primarily to channel funds into local school systems and local infrastructure. State taxes are collected once a year at the same time that you file your federal taxes and that's it. (But why did I get back $400 dollars from Uncle Sam and $2 from Virginia?)
