Is there any FREE income tax preparation on line or on the phone with a live person?

I used to do it, it was easy but last year we bought a house and I had a baby (Feb 2006), or should I go to one of those HR block offices? They are going to charge about $150.00.

  1. Great question! Yes there is! You can go the irs website and they have a link to several free on line services. they will ask several questions to see if you qualify and suit you with the one best for you. Another thing you can is...also on the irs website according to your state, you will find a local IRS facility and you can go there and they don't charge with helping you with questions and filing. If you cannot find this info..e-mail me and according to your state I will send you the link. Good luck!
  2. You can efile for FREE if you made under $52,000 last year. Here is the link: http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html You can choose a company like H & R Block and start there. It is so easy and basically, once you input the info that they ask for, they will calculate everything else. At the end if you qualify it will be free but if not, it won't cost that much as you would pay at the offices. And you have the choice at the end whether to submit your return through their site or not. So you have nothing to loose! Hope that helps! Congrats on the birth of your baby too. :)
  3. www.taxactonline.com There are no income restrictions for free filing at this site. Use the basic (free) version. While doing your taxes the basic version will try to get you to upgrade, but just keep saying no. Using the basic version preparing and e-filing your federal return will be entirely free.
  4. You can certainly FILE your taxes online for free, but if you have a lot of questions, I would go to a preparer. And you don't have to use H&R Block, there are several other national chains including Jackson Hewitt and Liberty. Also, it is sometimes cheaper to have your taxes done by a small local preparer.
