Where Can I go online to get free tax preparation?

What is the best online site to get my taxes prepared (preferrably free?) My friend suggested www.icanefile.org. Has anyone heard anything about this site?

  1. Try it Free. Easy to Use. www.txmstr.com www.of411.com www.turbotax.com Good luck! :-)
  2. The IRS has a list of free tax preparation services that are available each year. Look for "Free File/Free File Alliance Companies". You won't be able to access the free site without going through IRS' site first. But once you've registered, you can sign in at the main tax service's web site. I've used Turbo Tax and H & R Block. Absolutely FREE!
  3. In addition to the IRS website that has a list of free tax preparation site. You can try my personal favorite, www.SmartTaxInfo.com, where for as little as $9.95 you can prepare and efile your federal and state tax returns.
  4. http://www.icanefile.org is a great site actually. Normally, online tax sites will allow you to do your federal return free of charge but wlil charge you for your state return. Sometimes sites will also charge for efile or direct deposit but the website above does neither.
  5. I know someone who used that ican program last year, and he said it worked great. He did his taxes by answering a bunch of easy to understand "yes" and "no" questions, and he was even able to e-file everything for free (I got charged like $30 by Turbo Tax for e-filing my returns last year plus I got charged for my state returns). My friend said that it's virtually impossible to mess up your taxes up by using the ican program and that he plans to use it every year from here on out.
