Where can I find a list of U.S. tax rates for 2008 by state?

I'll hopefully be moving to the west coast in the summer, and am very curious to compare the tax rates of the different states. What's the definitive authority on current tax rates? I'm curious about all the nuances, from income tax to food tax.

  1. There is no place that I know of that lists all state taxes in one easy to find place. Finding this info will probably take multiple searches. Here is a link for income taxes and as it is geared towards retirees, it may contain other taxes as well. http://www.retirementliving.com/RLtaxes.html Then search using the following format us 2008 income tax rates by state change "income" to: gasoline utilities sales food sales use property tax (this will be nearly impossible as all localities have their own rates) Good luck with your move
  2. Press your Representatives and your Senators to pass the FairTax legislation already in both Branches of Govt.
  3. The Federal tax is the same regardless of the state in which you live. However that is not you issue. To my knowledge there is not a single source for the information you wish to compare. Each state will have it's own tax system and in some cases there will be a great deal of difference within that state. Generally you can go to the web site of the state taxing agency and get most of that information. Property tax and sales tax may be controlled by local taxing agencies so you would need to check on that. You need to select a couple of locations and compare those specific locations.
  4. This site provides information about state income, sales and excise tax rates: http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/tax_stru.html
  5. For State and Certain Local Sales Tax Tables you can use the 2007 rates at the source below (starting on Page A-11). (They would not have changed by much, if any, for 2008.) For the specifics down to the level that you appear to be searching, you'll have to go to the web site of the specific state. For instance, for California, go to www.state.ca.us; for Oregon, go to www.state.or.us, etc. And then, drill down through their web site for the specific tax information you're looking for.
