what is the difference between schedule c and 1040 long form?

I called the IRS and asked what forms I need to file this year. I started a company that had loss and not profit for 2007. I used my home office for primary office. I also worked full time with another company ( I will have a w-2 also). He told me to file a schedule c and a 1040 long. What is the difference in these two?

  1. A 1040 is the primary tax return, and can be used by anyone. It is often referred to as the "long form." Several other tax forms (1040A & 1040EZ) are shorter, but cannot be used by everyone. Schedule C is part of the 1040, and is used to detail your income and expenses from self-employment. The bottom line of Schedule C is carried to page 1 of the 1040. Based on your question, you may be in over your head this year. I would recommend you have a professional (not a storefront return company) prepare your 2007 return.
  2. They are totally different, You'll have to file a schedule C showing your income and expenses for your company, and ALSO file a form 1040. The 1040 will have the number from the bottom of the schedule C, and also your W-2 info.
