IRS 1040? How to get it?

I'm filling out my FAFSA today and I have our W2 forms... but I just found out I need something called an IRS 1040 or something.... HOW DO I GET THAT? And what if I won't be able to get it before March 1? I'm screwed right?

  1. IRS.COM....
  2. It is your tax return it may be a 1040EZ or 1040A if you aren't complicated. You should have a copy or can order a copy on IRS.gov but it won't be in time. Your parents may have your copy or your accountant or your software may still be on your computer and you can print a copy. If you only had a w2 or you you could reproduce it from your data and forms you down load from IRS.gov.
  3. the website is actually www.irs.gov you may also go to your local library.
  4. Local post office has those forms. You don't have to file til April 15th.
  5. You can print the forms and instructions needed from the below IRS site. Scroll down the page till you see the 1040/instructions files displayed, then determine which of the 1040 forms you need.
  6. You need copies of your and your parents' tax returns to file with your FAFSA. You should have copies in your records. You can also request transcripts from the IRS for Tax Years 2006 and earlier. Call 1-800-TAX-1040 to order those. They take about 10 days in the mail but if you have access to a fax machine you can have them in about 10 minutes.
  7. Download the form at irs.gov - but they are asking for your completed tax return, not just the blank form. If you are a dependent, they'll also want your parents' info
  8. visit your local IRS office and request a RETURN TRANSCRIPT, the financial aids will accept this transcript, it is a line by line transcript of what was filed on your original tax return. Or download form 4506-T and IRS will mail the transcript to you but could take up to 4 weeks. If you need an actual copy of the tax return then download Form 4506 and pay $39.00 for a copy of the tax return and could take up to 60 days.
