How do you file state taxes if you move?

I moved from Arkansas to Illinois, I have income in Arkansas, but not in Illinois. Do I file state taxes in just Arkansas or is there something to file in Illinois even though I had no income there?

  1. It depends on when you moved. You probably have to file returns in both states - Check out their state websites - probably Illinois.gov and Arkansas.gov Look for part-year resident instructions and forms.
  2. You'll need to file as part-year resident in both states. Income earned in Arkansas is taxed in Arkansas and income earned in Illinois is taxed in Illinois. Remember your returns are based on all W-2. You'll need to research both states, because you should be able to claim a credit for taxes paid to the other state. Double check their filing requirements to see what they need.
