Tax preparation-H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt??

This is the first year I have been responisible for filing my taxes. It has always been done by a family friend. Who is better H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt?? My taxes should be simple, I have only had one job all year. How much should I expect to pay??

  1. From personal experience don't go to H&R block. They over charge you and they don't give you all you are entitled to. They ripped me off for 3 years before I got smart and went somewhere else.
  2. Take a few minutes and read your forms and your instructions. You should be able to do it yourself. If you only had one job, and minimal deductions, save yourself the money and do it yourself. These tax prep companies make it look more complicated than it is. Anyone with common sense can do this.
  3. See here for a few more choices than you listed: http://www.qcktax.com
  4. I would recommend you try doing it yourself on paper. It's good experience for you and it is way cheaper. As you get older and things get more complicated then go pay someone or use something like Turbo Tax. You can file online yourself with Turbo Tax. Every time I've used H&R Block they have shorted me and the IRS found the mistake and I got about $2000 more than Block said I would. But they still wanted me to pay them for screwing up. With only one job and I assume you are single it is a very simple thing to do. What you pay depends entirely on how much you make.
  5. Tax repair services such as Block and Hewitt are a rip off often over charging for the simplest tax preparation. You file your own taxes depending on your individual circumstance at turbo tax. Try answering the Intuit Tax Freedom Project to see if you qualify to file both federal and state returns for free. You may still be able to file your federal return for free if you don't qualify for the Tax Freedom Project ! Click the link: http://turbotax.intuit.com/taxfreedom/
  6. I work for H&R Block and we do a good work and are well trained. But if you have only one job and no children you can do a 1040EZ or use H&R Block Tax cut software or Turbo tax. A return at a tax preperation office will cost you about $75.
