income taxes help

Employer did not take state taxes out of my daughters payroll?

My daughter is a resident of VA working for a Virginia based company. Are they not responsible for withholding her state income tax? Her W-2 showed no state taxes withheld, will she have to pay penalties? She's not a student and I know she claimed "0" but no longer works for this employer so she doesn't have a record of how she filed. Virginia does have state income tax. It looks like she'll have to pay and be more careful next time to be sure that taxes are taken out!

  1. So? If your daughter filed exempt, the employer would withhold nothing. If she filed single 2, it's possible she made so little they didn't have to withhold. If she owes, she owes.
  2. She should check with the payroll office to see what status she listed on her W4. If necessary she should adjust it accordingly.
  3. Depending on the income and your state laws, she may or may not owe an underpayment penalty. It would be advisable if the VA is still not withholding any income for state taxes to talk with the payroll department and see about getting that fixed.
  4. I have been down that road before, I had to pay them in full. why they didnt take them out ? I have no clue.
  5. Not enough info. Is she a high school or college student, a dependent on your return? They may have assumed she was exempt? Does VA have state tax--not all states do. Check out her W-4 to see how she requested her withholding to be done.
