Is there a way to find out if the IRS will be sending your refund to a collection agency before you file.?

My student loan is in default and the department of ed. has threatened to garnish my wages and sieze my IRS refund. I have just began communicating with the loan department to prevent garnishment but I don't think the issue will be resolved before I file my taxes. I really need this refund. How can I see if there has been a lien placed on my refund. ( The loan department isn't answering my question.)

  2. I would suggest calling and talking to the student loan department as they will work with you. If they have sent you a legal letter telling you your refund will be taken, then good chance it will. If not, continue working with them as they will help you with making deferments and getting your loan straighten out. You can always defer your loan if you cannot make payments on it like a hardship deferral.
