Taxable income?

How much do you have to make in a year for it to be "taxable income"? I only worked a month cuz I have a baby, and her father said I didnt have to work, but this summer I did just for a month cuz I was allowed to bring my daughter with me and I only made $580...turbo tax said it wasnt a taxable income? How much to you have to make to file taxes? My baby's dad and I are not married, and I cant file HOH cuz he's HOH, he made the money...

  1. I think the minimum is $12,000.
  2. You have no taxable income but you might still want to file to get any amount they witheld from you pay back or get some of this new rebate
  3. Your wages of $580 are less than the filing requirement of $5350 for a dependent and $8750 for an adult. If no taxes were withheld, there's really nothing to file for since you don't owe anything and there wasn't anything paid in. Since you can't live on $580, the baby's father is presumably claiming the child so you aren't eligible for EIC. I realize you are young. But when you file taxes you usually are doing so because you are actually paying some tax. While some low income earners may get all their money back and then some due to having children and being eligible for EIC, it's not guaranteed. If both you and the baby's daddy are eligible for EIC, the IRS won't let you both claim it. They'll have the person with the higher income "win."
  4. Are you filing single, HOH, Married? Makes a diff. If you have total earned income less than $8500 you don't have to file, but it may be to your advantage to do so. But with only $500, probably not.
