income taxes help

Minimum income for filing taxes? Are college students supposed to file taxes?

I'm a full-time college student and currently working part-time. I had started working as part of work study. I barely made $1700 from working for the last the semesters. I've paid around $150 in Massachusetts's state taxes. I'm wondering if I have to file for taxes because I'm going to apply to renew my financial aid and need to know. I live in New York but I go to school in Massachusetts.

  1. Since you've paid in, you should file.
  2. file to get your withholding back.
  3. anytime you have a job, you MUST file your taxes, if you don't you will suffer late fees when you go to file your taxes late. doesn't matter how much you've mad.. if you have had money taken out of your paycheck to pay social security, state taxes and federal taxes you MUST pay your taxes. it sucks i know. you will probably get a refund though!
  4. Around 3,000 thats not exact though
  5. if you made a wage and had taxes taken from you . you can file for a refund. at the poverty level some families take advantage of earned income crredits and deductions and reciever a bigger refund than the taxes they had withheld through the year.
  6. As long as your income is less than your personal exemption and deduction added together, around $8k you are not required to file. They took money out I would file for a refund. If you are a dependent on your parents tax return then there is no personal exemption but still file for refund.
  7. Whether or not you have to file depends on your filing status and how much income you have - being a college student doesn't change anything. If you are a dependent, you have to file a federal return if you made over $5350. You're far below that, so unless they took out money for federal income tax that you could get back if you file, there's no need or reason to file a federal return. You might be able to get something back from what you paid in to Massachusetts if you file a non-resident state return there.
  8. I believe that the minimum you need to make to be REQUIRED to file taxes is 7350. (give or take 200 dollars as the last time i checked it was 7000 but that was a few years ago) I would file anyway because you paid in and should get some money back since you made so little. *EDIT* I just looked it up and its 8,750! Boy i was way off. So if you made less than that, you dont have to file. If you are married then its 17,500. Check page 6 of that link to verify so you know im not just pulling numbers out of the air.
  9. Go to the following link for information on whether you must or should file (file if you owe no tax but tax was withheld from any of your paychecks): http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040a.pdf Also, check out http://umb.edu/administration_finance/bursar/residency.html. I believe that you will see that you continue to be a New York State resident. As for filing in Massachusetts, file for a refund of Massachusetts income tax withheld from your income. The following link to Newsday explains whether you must file a New York State return: http://www.newsday.com/business/yourmoney/ny-bzbrenner0113,0,1271888.column Finally, you may qualify for a tuition credit or deduction--or your parents may.
