income taxes help

Work in Texas while living elsewhere (easy question)?

I worked in Texas while a resident of California. I know that I must file a federal return and a California return and that Texas has no state income tax. Is there a procedural requirement to file a Texas return (even though there is no Texas income tax)?

  1. Nope. Texas makes things super easy.
  2. You luck out sort of. There's no tax return. Before you get too jealous, our property taxes and sales tax are how the state and local government gets the money (you paid rent to someone who was paying them). I compared my property tax bill one day with my dad. His property was worth twice what mine was, but he lived in a state with an income tax. His property tax bill was X. Mine was 4X. Had I had the same value of property, it would have been 8X. In retirement, his income tax would presumably go down, my property taxes *won't.*
