Income tax return (first timer)?

I've just had my first job in the summer of 2007 and I was wondering what kind of tax return do I need to file. I know I have to file my federal income tax return. Should I use the form 1040 or 1040 EZ? O_o I'm filing online, so it should be easier, but I've never done this before so I'm pretty much clueless. >_< I'm not sure if I need to file my STATE/LOCAL tax return (in OH). If yes, how do I go about filing it? I called the IRS and asked their operator about a PIN number, but he sounded groggy and not awake. -_- He said I don't need a PIN unless I want to keep track of my past tax returns, but I don't need it to e-file my tax return. Where do I register for a PIN, anyways? I've searched on the IRS site, but no where does it tell me how to register for one. I'm new to this whole thing and I really need help with this. Thanks for your time and help!

  1. If you're a first-time filer you must file a paper return and mail it in. You can't e-file your first tax return. Sorry. Most likely a Form 1040-EZ will be fine.
  2. If you're doing it online, the software or website will use the appropriate 1040 based on your answers to their questions during the tax interview. E-filing is pretty easy and walks you through step-by-step. The IRS has a Free File Program to e-file your federal return through tax service partners for free; millions of taxpayers qualify for this service. However, It doesn't start til mid-January. Depending on your state and/or Free File Partner you can file your state return for free at the same time. If not, you can pay a small fee or you can go directly to your state's dept. of revenue and e-file your state return. Ohio has a website to file your state return for free. Check out this link:http://tax.ohio.gov/online_services/index.stm#ifile The PIN is a 5-digit number you make up and doesn't need to be registered. **When you get ready to submit your return, the online service will ask what last year's AGI was, just put 0. Since you're a first-time filer.
