My solution is a strait sales tax, say 30%, so all can pay for the American dream, equally. This lady down the street gets about $6k a month, from child support, ssi and/or ssd. Total taxes paid about $800 a year in property taxes on her rent. ANY THING that is required by the government, fee's, permit's, that cost money is a tax. Yes there is a well permit tax http://marathon.mi-twp.org/mt_residential_plumbing.pdf

- I'm too taxed out to even answer this question!
- not enough, we need more taxes. The idiot tax ,the moron tax ,the incompetent tax, the Gw bush tax ( should be the biggest of all taxes)
- That's because 100 years ago, people could understand what the Founders created a lot better. The idea of clearly enumerating powers and reserving most to the states and the people has escaped "moderns" who witnessed FDR's single-handed reinterpretation of the US Constitution and caused "entitlement programs" and the birth of the nanny state. There were mistakes in that direction before him, but he really went hog wild for "parenting" the public who kept re-electing him. He is proof that the road to hell is paved with good intentions because he probably really believed he was doing a good thing instead of causing foundational rot of the greatest country ever. Given that the majority of government spending is unconstitutional, we could actually end most of our problems if we got the government back to its correct size. People should pay FEES for assorted things they use--so passports should not be free--they're not free to provide. Given that the government doesn't do much well, getting their noses out of everything would be a tremendous plus and stimulate the economy tremendously. If we also would then go back to a value-based currency such as the gold standard, we'd really have something. Of course, moving to objective standards means politicians lose their bargaining chips.
- Oh, I agree. I love how federal, state, and local governments hide taxes in user fees and then claim the tax rate is low. If I used pay something via a property tax and it suddenly becomes a user fee, but my property taxes *didn't* go down, it's a tax increase. Worse, the user fee is a name and a collection mechanism, it doesn't mean the money will actually go to paying the cost of the item I'm using. Look at aviation fees and gasoline taxes. Those are routinely raised after an event (9/11, the Minnesota bridge collapse) with nary a word about where the money that is already being collected for that purpose is being spent. I don't mind transportation taxes going to build biking lanes (provided they connect living and work areas, not around lakes) and mass transit, but I do mind if they go to constructing a museum!
- Think about it, the only truly "fair" tax would actually be to divide the annual budget by the population, and demand that sum from each citizen; Since the budget for 2007 is $2,415,852,000,000 that means each of the USA's 303,617,047 citizens should pony up about $7,956 each. If you paid less than that last year, you should quit bitching. If you paid that or more (like I did), then keep up the good work!
- And your solution is...?
- Your little list gets posted by people all the time so don't think you are reporting the news. The USA has the lowest tax burden of any western industrialized country and we seem to be doing pretty much OK most of the time. Live with it.
- And about half of them don't exist today or are just duplicate names for ones already mentioned. There is no "Workers Compensation Tax." It's INSURANCE. Lump all of the vehicle taxes together. Vehicle sales taxes go under sales taxes. Never heard of a "Well Permit Tax." Traffic fines are NOT taxes. Indirect or otherwise! There are no "Toll Tunnel Taxes" or "Toll Bridge Taxes", just tolls. "Telephone Recurring and Non-Recurring Charges" are phone bills, not taxes. Nice hodgepodge of imaginary phone taxes as well. The "Telephone Federal Universal Service Fee Tax" isn't a tax at all, but a junk fee that the telcos throw at you. There are no "Luxury Taxes" or "Marriage License Taxes" There are no "Building Permit Taxes", just fees. There is a difference. You get my drift. If you think taxes are bad in the US, move to Europe! Income taxes are 10% to 50% higher. Gasoline taxes are not 42ยข per gallon but $3.00 per gallon AND UP. Sales taxes average 20% -- more than double what they are here. The US has the lowest taxes in the industrialized world, FYI. Blame Congress and the White House for the budget shortfall. Even if you factor out Iraq, Afghanistan, and Katrina, there are still $7 TRILLION missing under Bush's watch. Where did THAT money go?? The current administration has run up the national debt more than ALL prior administrations in the history of the nation COMBINED. THERE is your problem!
