state tax lien?

so i just checked my credit , and it says "state tax lien" it says it was reported on 9/08/2007. I received a letter from the irs regarding this issue on 9/15/2007 and agreed to a payment plan with them , the first payment was due on 11/15/2007 which was sent already . according to the person who i spoke to at irs, in 2003 when my taxes were claimed HR blocked claimed that i only made 20,000 for that year , Irs is saying that i made more than that. I checked my w-2 for that year and it says that i only made 20,000. so how is that a discrepancy , now my credit is saying i owe this money , even after i agreed to a payment plan with them what should i do ? just to make some clarifications , the only paper the irs sent me was one saying that i had a "tax warrant" i was nervous when i received it so i automatically started a payment plan , now i don't know what to do

  1. I found myself in the same situation 3 yrs ago, the IRS moved a decimal and had me at 700,000.00 instead of 70,000.00 a year, I wish! I faxed them a copy of my W-2's and they explained they made an error and sent me a letter of release... I would ask them for proof that you owe it, It's your right as a Tax payer... Don't let the push you around. Good Luck
  2. Your posting raises multiple issues. IRS does not file a "state tax lien." Its state counterpart does. You will need to address that separately. If your tax return prepared by Block was correct you should have attempted to resolve the problem that caused IRS to say you earned more. Did some one appropriate your social security number? Before IRS assesses additional tax, it tells you why and gives you a chance to respond. Did you sit on your hands or something? You should not have rolled over and started paying money that you did not owe. I suggest you look over any paperwork that IRS sent and see if you can figure out what happened. Since Block did your return, ask for some help there. IRS shares its information with the states and the state will send you a bill before filing a lien. You must have ignored that too. Find out what is wrong.
