Can the state of Alaska garnish my IRS refund for failing to appear in court? I live in another state?
I was arrested in Alaska for driving violations, including DUI. I have never been back there, so I did not show up for my court date, etc. In the court records online, it shows I owe $2000 bail forfeiture. Can they garnish my IRS refund?

- No, the state cannot garnish your IRS refund. IRS refund garnishments need a specific court order and can only be garnished for child support without a court order. Also, governments do not institute garnishment procedures for unpaid fees, fines or costs. In general (every rule has an exception), garnishments are only used by private parties. Anyway, Alaska can't do it.
