IRS Refund Procedure?

Is anyone familiar with how the flow of refunds go through the IRS? Here is the question: From the date of acceptance, how long do they have to either issue a refund or send a letter (or call)? Do they have deadlines which they have to follow in processing refunds?

  1. That depends on each circumstance, if there are no issues with your return and it is electronically filed you should have your refund in about 3 weeks. If there are errors or questionable items on your return, it can take longer depending on what the issue is, if it is a questionable item they have to review and investigate whether you are entitled to that item. If it is a case of fraud the processing and release of a refund can take a year or more. If there are issues a Letter is sent usually within 30 days
