What are your thoughts on removing Federal income taxes?
I was listening to a program yesterday on a new propsal to remove the Federal income tax and instead have a federal sales tax of 23%. I personally thought is sounded great! Imagine taking home your entire paycheck!! No IRS. As long as the current exempt items are kept the same, the middle class and poor could really make out. What are your thoughts?

- Think about that. The poor, usually end up paying no taxes. Now they would have to pay 23%. Fair? Get a clue.
- Absolutely. Income Taxes are actually illegal. There is no law stating that you must pay income tax. Watch the dvd "From Freedom to Fascism" by Aaron Russo You are getting double taxed on everything by paying income tax and then when you spend your money.
- I believe the traditional answer to why this won't work is that rich people will import their high-ticket items from other countries, avoiding US sales taxes.
- sounds like a great idea to me. I am sick of paying exorbitent taxes and having the maney wasted on garbage thqt I don't need. and it would be harder to cheat. but 23% sounds kinda high. it should be more like 5%.
- Income tax was never ratified. So it is my opinion that it is illegal and we should not have to pay it in the first place. Same goes for property tax, which was put into place to pay off war debts, same for telephone taxes. Tax, Tax, Tax, the Government should try less spending.
- Taxes are taxes are taxes. Whether they take the money from me before I receive my paycheck or when I buy things, I still am out that money. I have no idea at all, and I'm sure that hardly anybody who is in favor of a national sales tax has any idea either, just what will be the "fiscal impact" of such a drastic change in the tax structure. How much money will the feds end up collecting? Will the fed's net revenue intake remain fairly constant or will it rise or fall drastically because of boom and bust cycles? Too many unknowns.
- Economy is something which can easily be fixed if they wanted to fix. Except too much money is going to the federal reserve and they seem to be satisfied with a broken system that they can benifit from. Unfortunately most systems at the moment are broken and it seems it will stay this way unless we actually study what the problem is and stop being so ignorant on everything.
- You must have read the fair tax book it is an excellent idea that has not been given a fair debate yet, as for Grumpyoldmen he does not have a clue what he is talking about this tax would basically eliminate the tax to the poor most people are unaware that there is 23% tax already inbeded in the price of good and services we buy, by eliminating the embeded taxes the price of goods and services would not change, for a illustration for those of you that don't understand an ex is gasoline a $3.00 a gallon has nearly 50cents of imbeded local state and federal tax. If you eliminated the embeded taxes and just do a fair tax of 23% you would still pay the same for gas but you would have eliminated the income tax and curtail the influence of politicians in controlling our lives, not only that but corporations here and abroad would flock to this country because we do not use them as tax collection agency that drive up the price of their goods and services. It is a classic win win solution.
- At one point in time it was a neccessary evil. BUT, since that time the gooberment has grown to such an enormous size that it's time to shut it down and bring it back to a size that it can be controlled or at least watched. There is no way that we can continue to allow them to open more branches so that someone's son-in-law can have a paycheck. They've already broken the system that is meant to secure us in our golden years. This is largely because they continually give themselves raises, spend money we don't have, and moving money from one place to another always swearing that it will regenerate itself. Let them live on our wages for one year and I guarantee thin gs will change. Look at the outrageous amount of money we spent on Clinton when he left office. Postage alone if I remember correctly was in the 5 digit area. TALK ABOUT WELFARE!!! It shows how much he cares about the ones who have to work our a#ses off to pay that bill! It would take most of us more than 2 yrs. to pay that, and you would have nothing else! And we even pay his other bills too. It's a disgusting way to start an evolution. But, it's past time to start it rolling!!!! Get rid of 90% of these people and we might be able to start things properly!!!!!
