Do you pay california state income tax for income earned from washington state? I lived and worked in Seattle then moved to California in May. Do I have to pay income tax for my Washington State income for 2006 Tax Year in California? I was told by an CPA, that I need to report income earned from WA and use the tax form 540NR (non-resident or part resident). What's confusing is, WA state does not collect state-income-tax therefore, my W2's from WA does not have any state income nor withholdings data on them. Lines 16 and 17 are blank.
How does an expat save California State income tax? I am a former California resident who still owns property in CA. My major source of income now comes from China where I already get heavily taxed. Do I still need to pay CA income tax as a non-resident? How do I qualify to be a non-resident of CA?
California State Income Tax? On 5/28 I received a FINAL NOTICE demanding payment for income taxes to the state of California for 2004. In 2004 I was a resident of Texas. During that year I resigned from my employer and was hired back as a consultant. I was self employed but billed through a consulting firm located in California. I assume these are the earnings CA thinks they are entitled to? I have never been to that state. The letter stated to call them if I do not owe the taxes. That was a joke... the entire phone system is automated. Per my CPAs request I sent a certified letter the following day to explain the situation. On 7/3 I received a letter thanking me for my correspondence. It stated to allow 2 months for processing. I thought things were going to be resolved. Then on 7/7 I received a PAST DUE notice and that they have issued a tax lien against me. I will be contacting my CPA on Monday, but does anyone know something that I do not? Texas does not have state income taxes. However I paid federal income taxes on all earnings.
Tax question - Married couple work and live in different state? Here's my situation: 1. My wife and I got married at October 2006. 2. My wife works in California whole year 2006 3. I work in Texas whole year 2006 4. We bought a house together in Texas on February 2006 5. Texas doesn't have Income tax but California does My question is: 1. Which one should we use? "Married filing jointly" or "Married filing separately"? 2. if "jointly", do I need to file California state income tax? 3. if "separately", can my wife deduct half the proterty tax and interest cost because of the Texas house?
Do F1 student needs to pay tax for "California State Tax" on "interest income" from "Saving Account"? Do F1 student needs to pay tax for "California State Tax" on "interest income" from "Saving Account" (Assuming the F1 Student is at his first 5 years in US)? From the Federal Tax, the F1 student for the first 5 years is NR status, as the result , he doesn't need to pay tax on interest income to federal. But how about for the California State Tax? Thanks And the F1 student home country does not have a tax treaty with United States.
State Income Tax Refunds in California? As we have all heard, there is a chance that people in California who are entitled to a state income tax refund may get an IOU instead. I'm wondering if that does happen, will we get interest on that amount when we finally do get the refund? My husband says don't count on it, but I say that's not right. We should get interest too.
California State Income Tax Adjustment? 1. On federal return, you can deduct the tax you paid to CA state. Now when you file Form 540 for CA, TurboTax seems to put your state income back to your taxable income, as if you can only deduct paid state income tax on federal return, but not for CA return. Anyone knows why? 2. On federal return, you can carry over $3000 capital loss. Somehow when you file CA tax, TurboTax suddenly put a lot of capital gains to the "addition" of the CA adjustment, as if you not only can't use the capital loss carryover, but have to pay a lot more for your recent gains? Is TurboTax buggy for CA returns? Thanks!
Future Military spouse, 1099 worker - where do I pay state taxes? My fiancee is in the Navy and stationed in California. I am currently still in my home state of South Carolina and I'm classified as 1099 for the company i work for. When I move later this year, my permanent address will still be my home in SC. My question is, will I have to pay California state income tax for the pay I earn after I move there on top of South Carolina income tax even if all my records will have my residency as South Carolina?
California claims I owe state income tax . I Never worked there!? I just got a letter (it was sent to my dad's house) from the State of California saying I owe income taxes from 2004. It has a date by which I must pay or file a dispute before it goes to collection. The date passed over a month ago. The problem is I have never held a job in Ca. I was stationed there for a few years in the Marine Corps but I always maintained a home of record in Ut and have never applied for Ca residency or anything of that matter I have also always payed Utah income taxes, including in 2004 (the year they claim I owe.) My question is: what do I do? I will call them Monday but I'm stressing out now. Is there anyway I can be forced to pay and can this ruin my credit (I've built my credit score very carefully and depend on it greatly)? What should I do to protect myself? Thanks All! Thank you Jss but I was active duty military. I know the same rules do not apply. I was stationed on a federally owned military base. I also spent almost all of 2004 out of the country on a taxfree zone.
Can I opt to have withheld more CA state income taxes during the year, so I can deduct more on Federal taxes? Living in California, my single biggest federal tax itemized deduction is my state income taxes every year. From what I understand, the amount withheld during the year is deductible. 1) Is the federal deduction based on amount withheld or actual amount owed? 2) Is is possible to legally opt to have the state withhold more money than normal? 3) Barring additional benefits of saving/investing my own income, does this strategy seem advantageous for reducing federal tax liability?
How much are my state wages for California Income Tax? I am a resident of California, but I work in Minnesota due to school. I had worked in California last year for a few months, so I have W2's from CA and MN. How much are my state wages when I file a California Resident Income Tax Return? Do I just add my CA W2's up or do I also add in my MN income? Thanks!
What forms do I use to declare independent contractor income on my 2008 California state taxes? Hi everyone - Hoping you can help. I'm an independent contractor in California. Federal taxes are totally clear to me, but I'm having trouble with state taxes: I can't find info on which forms I need to attach my California 540 form in order to declare that income that I earned shown on my MISC-1099. For federal: I already filed my 1040, and attached Schedule SE and C-EZ. I already sent in my quarterly taxes using 1040-ES. For California taxes, I already sent in my 540-ES to the franchise tax board for each quarter. But I'm looking at my 540 form and I cannot find state form that are comparable to the federal schedules SE and C-EZ. Where do I declare the income from the 1099-MISC on the California state forms? Thanks so much! Thanks for all of the help everyone -this is great info!
califorina state tax for out of state income? I believe I do not need to pay california state tax for the income earned from massachusetts. However, california state tax form schedule 540 does not have a item to deduct out of state income from federal adjusted gross income. do you know how to file california state tax for income from other states?
How do taxes work if you consult for a business that is out of state? Hello all, I am currently an independent consultant for a company based in Massachusetts. However, I do ALL of the work remotely in California. The employer did withhold anything. Do I still have to pay MA state income tax, or do I only pay California state taxes? Thanks in advance!
Online Income Tax Calculators -Federal and State? I am looking for a tax estimator for my Federal and California State income. I've used HRblock and Turbotax's online estimators but I don't think they include the State taxes. Any other sites I can try? Thanks
California placed a tax lien on me for California income taxes that I do not owe.? I am not a CA resident and never have been. The only reason they think I am a CA resident is that in 2004 I received a 1099 at a California mailing address . I sent them a copy of the state tax return showing that I paid NY State taxes that year. But they went ahead and filed the lien anyway. How can I get the tax lien removed?
I work at home in Florida for a company in California - do I have to pay California state income tax? I've been working at home in Florida for a couple of years now. My company is in Los Angeles - I'd lived and worked there since 2000. In 2007 I moved to Florida, but still paid California state income tax. Last year I was informed by our company accountant that I wouldn't have to pay after all. I own a house in Florida and don't perform any work or spend any time at all in California, so it seems fair that I shouldn't have to pay the tax as that I don't benefit from anything there (schools, roads, police, etc.). But I'm still looking for some concrete answers before I file this year.
Are state income taxes based on the address of the employer or the employee? I worked in New York over the summer, but I'm a California resident, and I used my California address for all the paperwork, so that's the address listed on my W-2 (and also where all my paychecks were sent). I have to file tax returns for both states either way, but I'm not sure whether to list my summer pay as NY or CA income. Is what state my income was earned in determined by my employer's address, or by my address as listed on my W-2? If it's considered NY income, then do I file my CA tax return as a part-year resident, or will I have to CA tax on it as well?
California state tax return help? I filed a IRS tax form...I filled out my form using online service. My federal tax form was accepted by IRS. I chose mail option...so, I mailed my tax form to IRS. My state tax form is accepted by california state. Do I still have to print out the form and mail it to state?? When I checked my refund status, it said: Please read the following information related to your tax situation: Tax Topic 203 - Failure to Pay Child Support, Federal Non-Tax and State Income Tax Obligations Your refund may be reduced to pay a past due obligation such as child support, another federal agency debt, or state income tax. If this applies to you, the Financial Management Service, who issues IRS refunds, will send you a notice informing you of any offset they have made. The details of the debt are not provided to the IRS. What is this means?? I am single with no children. I dont have any debt. Does anyone knows this means?? What should I do??
Can TurboTax appropriately calculate multiple-state income tax liability? For the first time this year, I had to work significant amounts of time outside my home state. I have been using TurboTax to prepare my returns for several years, but I have only been required to file my federal return, and my Virginia tax return. This year, I must apportion my tax liability at the state level between California and Virginia. If I purchase both the Virginia and California state TurboTax software modules, will the program correctly calculate the state liability for both states? Please, if you have not filed in multiple states and apportioned your days worked during the year, and if you have not personally utilized TurboTax to file your returns in this situation, do not reply to the question. I am looking for definitive answers, not opinion or speculation. Thank you.
Eeek! How do we file our state income taxes? Bare with me. I am newly married and we are filing jointly for the first time. My husband is a Marine and we're using Taxslayer.com because it's free for military. I am beyond confused on what to do when it comes to our state taxes. Taxslayer.com allows us to file as many as needed, but... My husband joined the Marines in October 2007 out of Indiana. He had only been living in Indiana for two months and received no income from the state. On his military paperwork, he is listed as being an Indiana resident. He has been stationed in California for all of 2008. He didn't live in Indiana during 2008, though listed as a resident through the military, and he is in California for duty, so does he not have to file any state taxes? Then there's me. I lived in Maryland when 2008 began. While living in Maryland, I worked in Virginia and DC. I moved to California in September, before we were married, so it wasn't technically because of the military. Do I file as 'resident' for Maryland, 'nonresident' for Virginia and DC and... 'part year' for California? Too many states, ahh! And lastly, if we're filing jointly through Taxslayer.com, will our state forms be recognized as being for either me or him? I'm a little confused on that too. If you actually took the time to read this, thank you!
california income taxes?what will i get back? moving to cali - assuming a salary of 90k, how much will i get back after all taxes are removed(state, fedral, any other taxes applicable?)? i'm single, dont own a house (will rent), will buy a car(if that matters)....thanks!
California Income Taxes - Foreign Earned Income Exclusion? This question has been mark as resolved: http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index.php?qid=20070223165350AAgg2kB However, the page five instructions actually state: If you excluded income exempted by U.S. tax treaties on your federal Form 1040 (unless specifically excempt for state purposes), enter the excluded amount in Column C. If you claimed foreign earned income or housing cost exclusion on your federal Form 1040 (under IRC Section 911), see the instructions for line 21. Therefore, it seems to me that entering the amount into column C applies only if that amount is derived from excluded income due to U.S. tax treaties. But what about the foreign earned income exclusion claimed by filing a federal 2555-EZ? The page 5 instructions state "see the instructions for line 21" but these ARE the instructions for line 21. Is this a typo in the 540CA instructions? Any ideas on how to fill out the 540CA to account for the foreign earned income exclusion?
Do I need to file taxes in California if I was a student out of state, and changed residency in August? I went to college in Maryland for 4 years, but remained a California resident. While living in Maryland I earned nontaxed (scholarship) and taxed (but claimed exempt from state) income. I moved to Virginia and became a resident in August and earned only nontaxed (scholarship) income. Do I need to file as a resident or a non resident of California (or file at all)? Do I need to file as a part time resident of Virginia?
Is there serious discussion underway in yr state re: significantly reducing or eliminating state income taxes? I understand this to be the case in both Georgia and North Carolina as these two states attempt to support the continued rapid growth of their economies. Is there any discussion that you're aware of by responsible parties in your state? In my state, NH, there has been a longstanding push to institute an income tax. With Democrats now in charge of both houses of the legislature as well as the governorship, I expect that this effort will continue with renewed vigor. One reason I and many others like me came to this state was because it's in dead-last place in terms of total taxation - personal, corporate, estate, etc. This has resulted in a relatively small state government focused on basic requirements (health, welfare, safety, roads, air & water) instead of the one I had in California that spent most of its time looking for ways to raise more money to spend. The purpose of my question is to identify states that are moving in the right direction in case I decide to relocate. I know some of you disagree with my position vis-a-vis state income taxes. Feel free to express your disagreement. All that I ask is that you keep it civil - otherwise, as per the usual, you will be reported.
Multiple-state income taxes? I have a web & graphic design business in California, but I also received income from clients in Colorado, Idaho and Oregon last year. All of these states have income taxes, but I'm not sure if I have to file returns in all of them, or just in California. I did receive 1099-MISC forms from each of these clients.
State tax on 1099 for California Part Year Resident? Hi, I received "1099" for few months of work done in California as contractor, I used to commute from Florida every week to work as contractor in California. Do I owe income tax to Cal State in this case. Am I considered as part year resident, even though I had no residence address in california. Please advise.
california state tax part year? If i move to california in nov on an indefinite job assignment, do i have to pay CA state tax for income earned out of state for jan - sept? can i be treated as a part year resident (i.e. only pay CA state tax on CA source income)
Can I be taxed by two states on the same income twice? Hi, I am a resident of California since Dec 2005. I have recieved some back salary payment from my old company in Missouri in 2006. i.e They paid off my dues in 2006. I have two W2s with payments from CA (present employer at California) and the other from Mo (old employer at Missouri). Since California taxes income from all states, will I have to pay income tax twice on the amount earned in missouri. How can I claim a refund for the taxes paid to missouri since I have to pay a tax to California on the amount earned in missouri. There doesnt seem to be any provision on the Missouri non resident tax form to claim this. Thank you.
Should Federal income taxes vary by state ? The reason I ask..is someone just asked the question... "am I considered middle class with 100k per year ?" Immediatley I thought.... depends on where you live ! In FL, you would be living great on 100k... not so much in parts of California though... Should income taxes vary by state, according to the average cost of living in that state ?...wouldn't this help to keep the standard of living in the US somewhat uniform accross the country ? And wouldn't it help the state to lobby on your behalf to keep your income tax low ? well as far as standar of living...I meant to say... standard of living being more uniform for the middle and lower class. Anyway.. thanks for the answers.... it was just a thought.
Is CASDI also considered part of state income taxes? Can I add the CASDI (box 14 on my W-2) to the total amount on state tax withheld (box 17 on my W-2) and put the total on form 540 (CA Tax Return) in line 36? After all that's some type of tax that I am paying, right? Shouldn't that be part of the total state tax withheld? I paid $216 during the tax year and it would make a big difference if that could be part of state taxes withheld, my return would result in a refund, instead of owing the FTB of California.

Non/Part-Resident State Income Tax? DETAILS: I've lived in California all my life (approx. 21 yrs.) and have never paid taxes before. On 06/07/2006 I moved to Montana and took up a job(s) and worked between 08/08/2006 and 12/01/2006 (approx.). In that time I made $3365 on a W-2 and had $74 deducted for stare income tax. I also made $510 in misc. income. I then proceed to move back to California on 12/14/2006. QUESTION(S): Now, the question I have regarding this, which I haven't been able to find the answer to is this: Did I make enough to have to report it? Am I required to file state taxes in Montana? Because if I don't have to then I don't see the need as it isn't worth it going through the hassle to do so. If I do need to, what forms do I need to fill out and send in? This is driving me bonkers. I can't seem to find out what I need to do.

State income tax for summer interns -- which state? I have lived in Pennsylvania for many years and currently go to a graduate school in PA. If I work in California for my summer internship (2 months), which state should I pay my state income tax to? In my W-2, the address will be in PA. The employer in CA is a "global" company that has offices all around the world, including a few in PA.
California Amended Tax Return(540X)? Hi I had some idiot do my state taxes and he forgot to fill in the line that read "State Income Tax Withheld". Therefore i owed CA, $497. When, i found the error i rushed to HR block and they filled out a 540X and now CA owes me $178. My question is should i send in the $497 and then wait for them to refund that PLUS the $178, or just wait for the $178
I’m looking to invest in a fund offering tax free income - any suggestions? Specificlly, I’m looking to invest in a fund that is diversified, short-term, tax-exempt money market or insurance fund. The fund objective must be to provide a high level of current interest income exempt from regular Federal Income tax to the extent consistent with preserving capital (and California State taxes if available), while maintaining liquidity, and stabilizing principal. I'm open to serious suggestions. Thank you for your time.
