I just turned 18 and they will be teaching us how to do our taxes next month, but I'm too anxious to wait. I worked at Carnival which was then bought out and turned into a Fiesta when I worked there so will I be getting another W-2 form or is this all? I worked there for 4 months and it was my first job so what do ya'll think? I think I am going to file on my own and I don't know if this also helps, but I receive social security survivors checks which end when I finish high school. Obviously I'm not going to be doing my taxes right now, but since its so simple I just want to know what I might get.

2006 Taxes - filing from different states? My question has to do with filing a joint return with W-2s from Virginia (with state income tax) and Texas (No state income tax). I moved and worked in Texas from June 2006 until December 2006 while my husband and children remained in Virginia. I normally use Turbo Tax to file our taxes. So would I just create a federal return listing all work and income from both states and then just file the Virginia State Income Tax with only income earned for within the state of Virginia for 2006? Right?

Maryland income tax question? I moved to Maryland from Texas in May. The Maryland tax booklet says that I have to include either a tax form from Texas or a schedule itemizing deductions from the other state. Texas has no state income tax, so I need to do the schedule thing but the booklet doesn't say what exactly the schedule should be that I had to send them. Does it make since to include just the math I used to arrive at the prorated deduction (as outlined in the booklet) or do they want something else. Federal taxes are no problem for me, but living in Texas for 5 years spoiled me regarding the BS of state taxes.

How can you stop income tax refund going towards child support? My friends husband's income income taxes goes to the state of Texas for back child support. He payes every week on his child support both children are over 18. But he owes back child support. This family is already on a limited income. He payes almost 200 a week and then also every year the state of Texas takes his income tax return and this family really could use the refund money. They have a 9 year old from her pervious marriage and they have a 7 month old. She has not been able to find work. This family is really in need. Im not saying that he shouldn't pay but I don't think his new family should suffer either. I guess him and his first wife married young (@15yrs. old) and separated for 10 years he supported her and the children and she also stated in court that he did,( I've seen the papers) but since it was not thru the courts - the court considers it all a gift and not support so this is why he is not behind. He was not a dead beat dad for those who think that. He is not a dead beat dad for those who feel they must attack him. For those who are attacking his wife because she has not found employment she has a 7 month old and have you not notice the cost of child care. This family is not on welfare - this family are involved in the community. They are scout leaders, baseball coaches they are good people. So when you feel that you must be rude and cut down others think of all the things you do not know. This is for people to ask and receive answers not to be attack and see how rude you can be. He has been current for years. It is just the 10 years him and his exwife did not go thru the court systems.
Got back wages from when I lived in a state with no income tax, but got state witholding now - what do I do? They paid some of it to me in 2007 and now I live in Illinois, so they witheld IL income tax - is there any way for me to get that money back as the wages were earned in a state with no income tax?
Would Texas do well as a Socialist Republic? A friend once told me that in actuality, the state of Texas was founded on socialist principles. That is why Texas Hold-em poker, unlike 5-card draw, involves SHARING of 3 cards in the middle of the table when you bet or fold. Also, Texas is a community property state. When a divorce takes place, the property gets divided in half between the two families. So my friend told me about a movement in Texas to raise the state income tax rate to 95% so that everyone can opt to marry the state in community property fashion. The other 5% not taxed would be the amount of a Texas state sales tax.
Does filing taxes jointly when income earned in different states work???? Hi, got this urgent question. Husband is military and has the primary residence in texas. He files via texas (state taxes) every year. Last year we filed jointly, but I didn't work, this year I did and worked where we are currently stationed in VA. Should we go to the free tax place on post, or could we file via turbotax online? How should we accomodate it with the two different states. He didnt pay state taxes but I did (for VA)! Thanks for any help. We don't know what to do about the situation
before selling a stock for large profit, can I move from Calif. to another state with no state tax and avoid.. If i want to avoid paying state income tax on a large sum of money I might make off of the sale of a stock, can I move to another state like Texas that has no state income tax and not have to pay California state tax on it? How long will I have to live in Texas before selling the stock? Can I keep our house in California and rent it out or would I have to sell it in order to avoid the tax in California?
On your income tax, can you deduct the taxes paid on gasoline taxes? For example, in the state of Texas. You pay 38.4 cents tax on every gallon of gas. It seems like I should be able to deduct all that money that I used to pay for gas taxes throughout the year from my taxable income.
I lived in 2 states last year. Texas then VT. Can I deduct prorated sales tax for Texas and VT income tax.? I was in Texas for 8 months then we moved to VT (permanently) for the remainder of the year. Additional details. I am using Turbo Tax. Schedule A does not provide a way to combine prorated state sales tax and state income tax. It only has the options to choose one or the other or the greater of the two.

Red State vs. Blue State? What are your thoughts, feelings or perosnal experiences between the two? I just moved to Louisiana from Texas - here is a breakdown of what I have discovered in my few weeks here. In Texas we had no state income tax - In Louisiana we do In Texas there is a flat sales tax on non-necessity items, there is no tax on necesseties (food items) - in Lousiana after looking at my receipts on purchases I have discovered three different sales tax rates, so far, (including food items). In Texas you pay sales tax on your vehicle then when you register it, you pay a flat fee for the registration, - in LA, you pay your sales tax, THEN you pay a percentage of the value of the vehicle ($$$) on for "road use tax" along with other fees when you register your car (we all know how "wonderful" LA roads are) Just my personal experiences so far. If I had known about the tax to death government of LA, I would have never taken the job that required me to move here
I am selling a duplex in Sacramento for 500k how much would I have for a 1031 after fees ? Bought in 1996 for about 100k. Assuming I use a realtor to sell the place....also how much would I have if I just sold the place and kept the money (I am an unemployed recent graduate so my only income as of yet is from rents (25k a year))... ALSO---> I am planning on using the 1031 to purchase investment property in Austin TX where I can get a far better %return, the problem is that the prop. tax is high (2.75%)...is the prop tax deductable on fed income tax? ALSO...will I have to pay CA state income tax when I sell the prop in Texas? If you can answer ANY of the question I would be greatful... peace
Filing State Income Tax to get $$$ back they wrongfully took out...? How do I file to get my Arkansas State Income Tax back off of my 2007 Tax Return? They wrongfully took out over 550$ throughout the whole year, and I have changed and proven I am a residence in Texas and shouldn't have to pay this tax. They told me I was right, and to file for it and I would get it back. I just filed my Federal Income Tax and it wasnt really tied to my state taxes.. What do I do? Is there an online site to file? Forms? ALL HELP HIGHLY APPRECIATED!
This is a question for someone from Europe who has never been to America? When you think of America what do you think it is like. I am so tired of hearing that the American people are wonderful it's the government that gives us a bad rap. I feel that the govenment is a direct reflection of it's people, I am a Republican and it has nothing to do with the war I voted for President Bush before the war we have many other issues besides the war, nobody likes war, everyone in America knows someone in the military. The Democrates are now in control in Washington and they do differ on the war in Iraq, and thats okay. The American people are more powerful than it's government. It's as simple as a vote, and many Americans don't vote, just complain. With 50 states thats alot of Government. I happen to live in Texas, but born and raised in NY, not much differant, a few differant laws some states have state income tax, Texas doesn't, law makers here can't change that law it can only be changed by a vote from it's citizans. I love America,
If my state has a state law to have veh insurance why can we not deduct the premium on my federal income tax? My state (Texas) has a law that if I fail to show proof of vehicle insurance I will be cited and can lose my drivers license; so, if my state is telling me I have to have vehicle insurance (state law) why can I not deduct the premiums (or part) from my federal income tax. Yes, I know that it's part of owning a car, (insurance) etc., But, lets say if I own a business or a house I am not required to have insurance (only if I have a mortgage) so if something unfortunate happens to my uninsured house or business I lose out (I know I can claim it in my income tax--the loss) and cry. The police is not going to cite me for not having insurance on my place. Whereas, if I am out driving or involved in an accident I will be getting a citation for not having vehicle insurance as required by state law.Even getting my driver's license suspended for not having insurance/violating a state law. Is there a state law that says I have to have insurance on my house or business? Yes, I do have insurance and I just got my renewal and it is awful/premiums--3 drivers/vehicles & no violations; Yes, I have shopped around and it is not any better (not even w/the lizared).
Taxes in TEXAS...? If I live in Texas only part-time of the year but work in a neighboring state where there is a Income Tax (unlike TX). How do I decdie if I need to pay income Taxes?? Does the state where I work has any say in it or is it up to me to declare my domicile in TX. Can I maintain a part-time residence in the state wheer I work without having to pay Income taxes there? P.S. I currently do NOT live in TX....but I am planning on doing so in the future..
California State Income Tax? On 5/28 I received a FINAL NOTICE demanding payment for income taxes to the state of California for 2004. In 2004 I was a resident of Texas. During that year I resigned from my employer and was hired back as a consultant. I was self employed but billed through a consulting firm located in California. I assume these are the earnings CA thinks they are entitled to? I have never been to that state. The letter stated to call them if I do not owe the taxes. That was a joke... the entire phone system is automated. Per my CPAs request I sent a certified letter the following day to explain the situation. On 7/3 I received a letter thanking me for my correspondence. It stated to allow 2 months for processing. I thought things were going to be resolved. Then on 7/7 I received a PAST DUE notice and that they have issued a tax lien against me. I will be contacting my CPA on Monday, but does anyone know something that I do not? Texas does not have state income taxes. However I paid federal income taxes on all earnings.
What is something that isnt currently taxed in Texas? What is something that isn't currently taxes that could be taxed, that most everyone uses, and that could generate state money to fund Texas schools? Besides state income and when you by a home. Be creative with it.

Checks and Balances- Judicial, Legislative, Executive whos being checked/whos checking? I'm struggling with this part of my American Government and I have a list of examples here...can you tell he who the checker is and whos getting checked so I have a better idea? President George Gumm appoints Cheryl Cherrystone as the ambassador to the newly formed nation of Gumball. Ms. Cherrystone's appointment has been approved by the U.S. Senate. Govenor Grunch vetoes the state legislature's bill, which would give each citizen in the state a ten percent reduction in their state income tax. President Phillip Pepper, a conservative, nominates Judge Jane Jugg to be the next Cheif Justice of the Supreme Court, creating a conservative majority on the bench. Cheif Justice Thomas Tightwad declares the school funding plan of the state, as passed by state legislature, to be unconstitutional. Judge Hernando hardline is approved as a feeral judge for the Fifth District Court of the State of Texas.
Do undocumented immigrants really abuse social/medical programs? A recent quote from the Texas State Comptroller: "Undocumented immigrants produced $1.58 billion in state revenues, which exceeded the $1.16 billion in state services they received." Texas has no state income tax, so immigrants pay sales and property taxes, along with various state fees. I'm not advocating any specific view, but you may have noticed that I cited my sources. Most stats compiled in the "War against illegals" has been compiled by partisan groups (on both sides) that skew data, so it would be endlessly useful to cite one's source.
states with no income tax? Texas, Nevada, and Florida are three states with no state income tax, and they are the 3 fastest growing states in the country. Between 1990-2000, Wyoming, New Hampshire, and Alaska were the three fastest growing, and they also have no state income tax. why is it that the states with the highest taxation were the slowest growing? feel free to look any of this up, dont take it from me.
Is Texas a nice place to live? (Answer especially if you live or have ever lived in Texas. Thanks!)? I've been to Texas and really liked it, particularly Galveston, Austin, San Antonio, and Ft. Worth. The people were friendly, weather was hot (of course), there is a diversity in geography and landscapes, the culture and history are rich, and it's really clean. I hope my impressions of the state are correct, because I really want to move there from Kentucky. Which areas of Texas would be the best to live in? I'm not a huge fan of Dallas and Harris Counties, but perhaps I can be swayed with a lot of convincing. Other places in Texas seem just wonderful. Oh, and not to mention, there's no state income tax (although it is made up in sales and property taxes, which still are comparable to Kentucky.) I'm a nice, friendly, polite, outgoing guy; while there are nice and not-so-nice people everywhere, I think I'd get along pretty well in Texas. By the way, to anybody from NYC, California, Ohio, or New Jersey: I ain't moving there, FYI.
Will people who live in states without income tax only get $300 rather than $600 from the new rebate checks? In states like Washington, Texas, and Florida who do not have income tax are those people only receiving $300 per individual? I've been searching online and can't find the answer. There is a lot of information about the new economy relief checks that are supposed to be coming this spring, but none that get specific to states. Any help would be appreciated. I realize that this rebate is federal so everybody in the country, who qualifies, will receive money. What I want to know is, if having a state without income tax will affect weather individuals can receive 600 or if they will only qualify for 300.
Hey Texans: I love Texas and am considering moving there. What do I need to know before I move? I'm looking into the following places: D/FW Metroplex (with the exception of Dallas County. I really like Fort Worth and Arlington, in particular.) Austin San Antonio Galveston I'm a nice, polite, educated young man from Kentucky looking to set my foot in the job market. I understand Texas has a booming economy, with lots of jobs, a great climate in which to be an entrepreneur, and no state income tax. Of what little I've experienced of Texas, they are the friendliest people I've ever met, much more so than Kentucky; maybe I'm naive, but I guess I'd understand more once I moved there. What is so great about these cities? Would I be as well off to live in the city or its suburbs? Some other important factors I'm considering are crime, cost of living, overall quality of life, traffic, culture, and proximity to good healthcare. If you have another Texas city besides one I mentioned, bring it on, all suggestions are welcome! Thanks ya'll! Oh, and I'm also single. I'd like a city that is "single-friendly," if you will.
I live in Kentucky, hate it, but love Texas & want to move there! Should I, and why? Where are the best areas? I've been to Dallas, Ft. Worth, Arlington, Mesquite, Crawford, Belton, Austin, San Antonio, New Braunfels, Houston, Galveston...yall probably don't want to know all the places. At any rate, I've been all over Texas, and loved it all (except Dallas). Many people I met were VERY friendly, and at the least polite and courteous. It is a very clean & scenic state, and each major city has a unique social and cultural element to it. (For instance, Ft. Worth is more western and midwestern, Austin is more funky and eclectic, and San Antonio is more western and Tex-Mex.) I've done some research. The crime rate is not lower there than it is in KY. But, there is no state income tax in TX, and housing costs, utilities, and property taxes are for the most part cheaper in TX. Also in TX, schools and colleges have a pretty good rap, and the climate is warm or hot year-round. Where in Texas should I move to or avoid? Why? Thanks! I live b/t Louisville & Lexington (both very unfriendly!) Top 5 list of things I'm looking for: 1. Friendliness 2. Job market 3. Cost of living 4. Cleanliness 5. Natural beauty and attractions
Filing taxes in Tx, residency in CA? Anyone with advice would be greatly appreciated!! My husband is in the USAF and we are originally residents of California. I moved to his duty station in Texas with him in Jan of 06 but never changed my residency from CA. We have since purchased a home in TX, I work here, and I've registered my vehicle here. I've had extra money withheld on my federal taxes every month in anticipation of owing taxes to CA (no state income tax in TX). Is anyone aware of an exemption or form I could submit in order to not have to file/pay to CA for taxes this year??
should i rent or buy in austin, tx? Is it worth it to buy a home (condo) as a graduate student? I've just been accepted into a PhD. program in Austin. The average time for completion is 5.5 years. Instead of moving from place to place I'm thinking of purchasing a condo there in the $75-85k range. I'm 21 and graduating with my B.S. this May. I have no student loans. I own my car. I've paid the most of my tuition + rent + insurance + CC+ my car without parental help. I pay for my CC in full always. I also have $4k in Roth. My acceptance into the program includes tuition waived, free health and dental insurance, one year of Roth IRA paid and a $2500 "signing bonus." Most importantly, it guarantees an annual $24,500. There is no state income tax in Texas. However, I cannot work under the school's contract. Many grad students buy their own apartments. In the same building, rent for a 1BR/1BA is ~$500-700 and many of the grad students there I've spoken with have mortgages in the $700-800 range.
Texas Business Taxes? Im wanting to start my own business an RV Park on a lake site somewhere in the state of Texas. If I charged $300 all bills included a month for 40 spaces at full capacity my gross income would be $144,000 a year. My question is what would be my average percent of taxes each year on that business? Also are the property taxes separate or included in the business taxes? Lets say the property is 4 acres......
i got stuck on this question while filling out my taxes--? "Did you receive a refund of state and/or local income taxes during 2007 from your 2006 tax return or a prior year tax return?" I'm filling out TEXAS taxes..... well... I worked in CA in 2006. where can i find the answer to this question in my 2006 return file--- cause i can't remember if i got a return on state or federal....
What are the rules and regulations for preparing tax returns in the state of Texas? I have experience in preparing individual tax returns and I was wondering are there any rules and regulations to do so in the state of Texas? I would like to earn extra income on the side and work out of my home, can I do this without having any certification of degree in taxes?
In which State, I should buy a house for rental investment? I would like to buy a house for investment purposes at a price of $300k or less (putting 20% down). I am a Texas (Houston) resident but I am willing to make investment in any state that brings higher returns. I wonder which state will be the most suitable from various aspects including property taxes, state (non-resident) income taxes, quality of schools, appreciation of real estate property, rental values, etc. Thank you for your time.
I am selling a duplex in Sacramento for 500k how much would I have for a 1031 after fees ? Bought in 1996 for about 100k. Assuming I use a realtor to sell the place....also how much would I have if I just sold the place and kept the money (I am an unemployed recent graduate so my only income as of yet is from rents (25k a year))....also,,, I want to get the tenants out of one of the units so I can renovate it and rent it for more (or leave it vacant) , what is the best way (legal) to get them to get them out (is it legal to break the lease for rennovation or if I plan to move into the unit?) should I offer money or pay for moving expenses...how long do I have to give them ALSO---> I am planning on using the 1031 to purchase investment property in Austin TX where I can get a far better %return, the problem is that the prop. tax is high (2.75%)...is the prop tax deductable on fed income tax? ALSO...will I have to pay CA state income tax when I sell the prop in Texas? If you can answer ANY of the question I would be greatful... peace
What exactly does income tax refer to? I am trying to calculate how much tax I need to be paying each year. I was looking at the IRS website at the income tax rates. It says filing as married, jointly for 2007 is $1,565.00 plus 15% of the amount over 15,650 for incomes between $15,650 and $63,700. Does income tax refer to only the federal withholding or everything combined (federal + state + medicare + oasdi + etc..)? If I anticipate making $63000 for 2007 in the state of Texas, how much total taxes should I expect to pay (this includes federal withholding, oasdi, medicare, and any other applicable taxes)? I want to know exactly how much I should expect per pay check (bi-weekly) if I have the exact amount of taxes withheld per paycheck so that at the end of the year I neither owe the IRS or have a refund.
Texas, Louisiana, or Kentucky, and why? My top picks: 1. TEXAS. My adopted home. Great genuine people, diversity in cultures and geography, Texas pride, the most beautiful women I've ever seen (and some of the nicest I've met!) There are mesas, sand dunes, canyons, deserts, plains, prairies, forests, swamps, marshes, beaches all in the same state. No income tax! 2. Louisiana, my native home. I love my family there, and it is a culture and region distinctly its own (even if it does have an idiot for a governor and NOLA's mayor is also an idiot.) Friendly folks, beautiful in a unique and mysterious way, a very enchanting culture that keeps one lured in. It won't leave me! I can't say I like: 3. Kentucky. Lived there, it's more raaayed-neeeyck than many places. Rude and cliquish natives, clerks at Wal-Mart and Kroger tend to be b*tchy, east Ky. is depressing, very little to do, some of the rudest clients I still deal with in my job come from KY. At least it has nice farms.
Do I pay taxes on stock sales based on what state I bought them in, or currently live in? I moved to Texas after living in California for the last 11 years, and I plan to sell some stocks which I accumulated in California. Now that I live in Texas, do I have to pay income tax on the profits from those stocks to California even though I will not be a current California resident?
Married couple living in two different states filing jointly.? I live and work in Texas where they do not have state income taxes. My husband lives and works in Arizona where they do have state income taxes. We recently got married 3 months ago and are planning to file jointly in Arizona. How does that work out. He makes $45K and I make $32K. I have a house in AZ that is in my name only, he lives there, I still live in Dallas.
in texas, if my gross income is $120 a paycheck, and i have about 2-3 dependents, what would the net pay be? going back to work after 12 yrs and have no clue what to expect since i won't get that first paycheck for about 3 weeks....was wondering if it is worth it or not. there is no state tax here. http://www.paycycle.com/resources/paycheckCalculators.jsp i used this paycheck calculator, and comparing it to my husband's paycheck, it was correct in its calculations. my result was estimated around $110, since there was no federal withholding up to 30 hours, and i actually used only 1 dependent, myself. sorry, guys, answered it myself, but thanks for your replies! :)
New York Income Tax...help!? I'm a US Citizen and I moved from Texas to New York earlier this year. Can someone guide me in the right direction as to how I am supposed to file my income tax return in a couple months?? One for TX and one for NY?? I've browsed the net but I don't even know if I'm considered a New York resident! I work for a New York based company and get New York state tax deducted from my paycheck. Thanks in advance for those that help!!
Possible move to Long Island and cost of living? Husband has been offered a job on Long Island, but we are afraid the $70,000 salary is not going to be enough to live on. We live in Texas now and pay no state income tax. Any thoughts or advice?
Question abaut federal adjusted gross income? My wife is working for a company in Texas, and the state of Texas does not require her to file state tax. She lived in Texas from January to May. We got married in April and from May to December she lived with me in Ohio. She got two W’s one with her maiden name and another with her married name. Now we have to file state taxes for Ohio, and it is asking for Federal Adjusted Gross Income. Should I subtract her wages from January to May?
you opinion about legalization? if illegal immigrantsobtained legal work status , and eventual permanent residence and possible citizenship, as currently advocated by the Bush administration and approved by the Senate, state income tax collections might increase, but this likely wold be outweighed by increased elegitibility for public services available to low-income families, example: Texas, Florida and California
State tax deduction - Corporate taxpayers? For state tax to be deductible on Form 1120, the tax must be income based? For example, Texas has net taxable capital and net taxable earned surplus. A taxpayer pays whichever is higher. Does it mean if subject to net taxable capital, then it is not deductible on Federal return?
