Where can i file JUST my state (NC) income tax? I have already filed my federal.? I have filed my federal already online for free @ H&R Block, they want to charge me $30 to file my state. Are there any websites where I can file state income tax for free as well?
NC State Income Tax Return.? I have been a Florida resident all of my adult life so I have never had to file a state tax return before. In January I moved to North Carolina and I am pulling my hair out trying to fill out this D-400 form. I was unemployed for all of 2008 and collected unemployment with no tax withholding. My wife was also unemployed, did not collect unemployment but had a few hundred dollars of taxable interest. The combined income from my unemployment and her taxable interest was less than the standard deduction for a married couple filing jointly on my federal tax return making our taxable interest 0.00 on our federal return. The "Additions to Federal Taxable Income" section on NC D-400 (lines 30-40) are what I am having a problem with. Line 30 says I need to put down $10,900 as my standard deduction from my federal return but the standard deduction for married filing jointly on the federal return is 17,900! The other problem I have is with Line 35. It says I need to add another $3000 addition. What is that all about? With all these additions it gives me taxable income that I did not have on my federal return. What can I do to reduce or better yet eliminate my taxable income? Should I be using the D-400 form in my situation or is there a more advantageous way to do my taxes?
Notice of Individual Income Tax Assessment - NC? It looks like others have had similar problems, but I couldn't quite find the exact same situation as mine, so here are the details for my situation, and any help is appreciated! So I received a notice of individual income tax assessment from the NC dept of revenue for tax year 2003. I filed my federal taxes that year (I'm pretty sure it was through their "novel" phone-filing system which was later discontinued) and I think, through my own fault, I forgot to file my NC return. Now the state is telling me I owe them taxes for that year, which normally I guess would make sense, but I am positive that if I had filed, they would have owed ME. I made a whole $2,604 that year (according to the assessment, as I have no documentation, I only know I worked part time, was a full-time student, and I was still claimed as a dependent) (again, my fault for not keeping copies), and I always claim as few exemptions as possible. So I guess my question is where do I go from here? I don't want to necessarily contest the assessment if it's likely that the assessment is correct, but I don't understand how any student who only made $2000 the entire year and claimed (I think) 1 exemption would owe taxes!! If that all made sense, I would really appreciate thoughts and comments! (Oh, and I called the IRS's hotline to request my tax transcript for that year and the automated system actually told me it wasn't available! I did request they send a transcript of my account for the year but I won't see that for another 15 days) Thanks!!!!!!! Note: I had NO unearned income; the only money I earned was through my job... No interest, capital gains, etc. Thanks!!
Out of state college student: I made $487 working for my school, do I need to file a state return? I had a summer job that made $15000 (in GA) and a side job at school (NC). I filed my $487 on my federal income tax form but do I need to do state return form? This is my first time doing taxes...
Question about unemployment Insurance? I Filed my claim for unemployment Dec. 19 08 in NC. I filed the weekly certification on the 24th and again on the 2nd. Do I have to file every week on the same day? Did I mess something up by doing it on the dates above? I got two things in the mail from them about tax withholding and it says how much for state income rate to be taken out (percent) but what do I put? When I filed weekly certification today 2nd it said something about not being paid for the week because of the wait week, but I filed for benifits on the 19th two weeks ago?
NC state income tax refund help? If I made under $2,000 last year (am a student), and I had all taxes withheld...should I get a state tax refund. I paid $97 in state taxes. So should I get that $97 back on top of my federal refund, if I file for a refund?
RE: NC State Income Tax - how agessive? How agressive is NC in collecting income tax on part time residents? Does NC try to collect on lump sum retirement payments in the year an individual moves to the state?
how many think this is fair? in case you didn't know, the state of NC gives poor people money to help pay their energy bills. it's called a "low income energy assistance" check, and it's issued just like any other state check. our tax dollars pay for it. now I'm all for this, if people really need it. but what I saw today turned my stomach. see I work in a grocery store, and people bring those checks in to get them cashed. today a couple came in with one of these, telling me how thankful they were to get it because they were so poor. but as soon as we cashed it for them, they used half of it to buy booze. that's where my tax money goes. how unfair is that?
What amount of state tax (NC) should I submit for my small business? I own my own small business (LLC), I am the only employee. I'm trying to find out how much state income tax I should send in quarterly to avoid having a tax bill at the end of the year. Thanks.
How do I retain a temporary address in another state for a long length of time? I have a primary home in the state of Florida, but will be working for a few years in NC, (and renting) but want to retain my permanent residency in Florida until my home sells. How do I do that in regards to income taxes and residency rules? Also will I be taxed on my paychecks according to NC taxes or would Florida tax laws still apply? (NC has state income tax- Florida does not- I would like to abide by Fla law if I could)
Need a free online e-file tax program for state renturn? I need to file a tax return for Ga and NC I am low income and want to e-file, but can't find anything that free.I need for part year tax
Ex girlfriend moved to Tennessee and took my son.I was paying support. What is the NC law on continue to pay? I voluntarliy paid child support while he was here and I got to see him. Then she moved out of state to live with her brother without me getting any say so about her leaving the state with my son. She has him so I told her I have no problem whith her claiming him by herself on her income tax and she went belistic on me , said she darn right was going to, and started calling me a deadbeat dad and cussing me out. I was paying her $500.00 a month. I'm trying to find out what the law for this in North Carolina is. I need information, not opinions.
NC Tax Refund How long and status!? How long is it taking for everyone to get back their NC state income tax refund. I check the status on mine today and this is what it said "Please call 1-877-252-3052 for assistance about your refund amount.". Is anyone else getting this and why?
Can I claim the NC Tax Credit for Children on Part 3 of Form D-400TC? I'm confused about this credit because Part 3 states: "If you are entitled to claim the federal child tax credit and your federal adjusted gross income..." Well, I couldn't claim the 1st child tax credit on my federal form 1040; however, I did qualify for the additional child tax credit. So, do I fill out Part 3 of NC Form D-400TC or not? I really don't want to have to call NC Dept of Rev and have to wait to speak to someone. If anyone has a full understanding of this credit, please share your knowledge. Thanks, hrblock. It's nice to have someone who can interpret the government's thoughts.
when you run short on money, do you cut spending or simply raise your income? THIS IS MY FIRST, AND ONLY QUESTION HERE. it seems our federal, and state governments only know how to raise taxes, the fed is now considering raising the gas tax, our state(NC) is considering a .04cents tax per mile driven. even congress is accepting a pay raise while taxing us more. I am curious why people keep voting for the same corrupt democrats and republicans. MOST VOTED FOR WHAT THEY BELEIVED TO BE CHANGE, BUT NOW IT APPEARS YOU HAVE ELECTED ANOTHER 4 YRS OF THE SAME CORRUPT, TAX AND SPEND LEADERSHIP. WHY?????? Previn- you miss the point. just because other countries tax their people to death doesnt mean we should. the govt. should cut back on hand outs. not me cutting back more for the govt. looly-you too dont get it! the dems supported the war as well. you dont understand the question, a perfect example of voters who cast their vote for appearances and slogans, both dems and reps own this mess, but refuse to cut spending. maybe i see it too clearly. LKSCMIND- You my friend are correct. i constantly write my representitives. only one responds. i only hope the people will act and see it will take independent thought and saying NO. t-i plan on running for local office, almost impossible for an independent here in NC, BUT I AM TRYING TO MAKE YOU SHEEP THINK.
Can I leave unemployment benefits off my 1040 if it makes no difference in my refund amount? I really need my tax refund ASAP. I have a simple return, and the only item I lack is the 1099-G form from my state (NC) that shows some unemployment insurance benefits I received last year. That state office reports that they won't have these forms out to recipients or available on their website until January 31st. Reporting this income made absolutely no difference when I did my 1040 online, because my total income for last year was so low, and I'm a single mom, head of household. I know the amount I received in benefits, and that I paid no taxes on it, but the 1040 asks for other identifying info and numbers that I don't have. Can I just leave the UIB off the return, or put it somewhere else on the 1040?
Question about NC income tax adjustment.? Ok, so, I got a letter from NC department of revenue saying that my state refund was applied to a debt that I owed the state. I called and they said that I owed $2,300 in state taxes from 1999 that were never paid. I did some research and my state taxes from that year were paid because my employer automatically deducted them. I just never filed my state taxes for that year.(I was young and it was my first time filing. I telefiled and didn't know that telefiling doesn't file your state). So I called the number on the letter from NCDR and the rep said that all I would have to do is get a copy of my W-2 from 1999 and fax it to them and they would give me a credit. I've done that already. I'm just wondering what kind of credit will they will give me? Is it something that will be adjusted so that state taxes aren't taken out until I'm paid back? Will they issue me a check? Will I get in any trouble for not having my state taxes filed for that year? I know that's a lot to take in. I just hate waiting so long to hear back from them, they said it could take a couple of weeks to process the info I sent them.
Reporting state tax refund: income? When I filed my 2006 NC tax return in 2007, I forgot to report the amount of NC taxes that were withheld. Therefore, the amount that I owed was huge. When I filed my 2007 federal return in 2008, I included the state taxes I paid as part of my itemized deductions. A few months later, in Sept. 2008, I decided to amend my 2006 state return to report the state taxes withheld that were not reported previously. I received a refund of the taxes I paid, plus interest. Now I'm working on my 2008 return. I already received Form 1099-INT, which shows the amount of interest I'd received from my refund. I've been told that I should write this amount in Line 8a (taxable interest). But I also see Line 10, which says, "Taxable refunds, credits, or offsets of state and local income taxes." What does that mean? Do I need to report both the interest earned AND the amount of the refund I received? Or just the interest? If this helps, when I filed my 2006 return I took the standard deduction. I'm using form 1040
NC State taxes on convention IRA account withdrawl? Are IRA withdrawls in N Carolina treated the same as income
Which city: Austin TX, Louisville KY, Cincinnati OH, or Greensboro NC? I just got a transfer offer from my employer to move to one of four cities. No matter where I go, I will be paid the same gross income ($75,000/year). Here's what I know about the following places, since I've been to all four: -Austin: Since it's TX, no state and local income taxes. Property taxes are through the roof. Gorgeous city, great parks, almost non-stop nightlife, probably the friendliest and most laid-back of the four cities. -Louisville: Olmstead parks, nice countryside, big bang for the buck! City is becoming more ghetto. Lived there for 8 weeks and found the people to be very rude, closed, and impolite. -Cincinnati: BAD drivers. The rest of Ohio sucks. But, I LOVE Eden Park, Jungle Jim's, and WEBN fireworks! -Greensboro: High taxes, cost of living, everything! But very close to the Smokies and Shenendoahs. Natives are still friendly. Currently live in Houston. Age 28, single, no girlfriend, love live music, friendly and outgoing! Thanks in advance!

22,672 is my 2006 income. Make 2.13 to cover federal and state taxes. Why must I pay in over 3200? I'm a waitress in SC but live in NC. I made 22672 as income. get paid 2.13 an hour which I thought covered the majority of my federal and state taxes. I am also a full time student who receives no state or federal assistance and I'm 20 years old with no children or anything. I was told I made to much money to be claimed by my mother or boyfriend, what's the deal? Should I go to naother tax agency or should I just try to pay the money?
How do I file State Taxes when I worked and lived in 2 states? I worked and lived in SC from 1/1/2007 until 7/29/2007. I currently work and live in NC from 7/30/2007 to the present. Do I file SC return as a non-resident and NC as a resident since that is where I currently reside? I'm using Turbo Tax and the problem I am running into is it shows that my NC taxable income is actually MORE $ than what I earned while living in NC (about $12k more). I'm not understanding how NC can tax income that I earned while working and living in SC. I assume Turbo Tax is pulling that data from my W2's (Federal), but I don't understand why my NC taxable income is much higher than what my W2 says my NC income actually was. I'm thinking that somewhere I need to enter a credit from SC somewhere on the NC return, but I'll be darned if I can see where or how to calculate that. Thanks for any replies/help!
Do I have to file a nonresident 2010 state income tax report if income less than $415.? Residents of NC. with spouse working in 2009 as traveling nurse. 2009 State tax refunds of: LA $415., AL $17. and GA $252. were received in 2010.
What states require you to pay personal property taxes on your private automobile? I just moved to NC and they do require it. I've lived in AZ, TX, and FL, but have never come across this. I know state income taxes are the norm in most states, but I thought this was overkill. Any other states? Thank you!

How should I fill out the NC-4 tax form if I do not live in North Carolina but am going to work there? I live in Tennessee and we don't have a state income tax, but over the summer I will be working in North Carolina and have to fill out one of the forms. Its for a summer camp that I got hired onto, and they provide my housing and everything.
Which city to move to: Austin TX, Louisville KY, Cincinnati OH, or Greensboro NC? I just got a transfer offer from my employer to move to one of four cities. No matter where I go, I will be paid the same gross income ($75,000/year). Here's what I know about the following places, since I've actually been to all four on business trips: -Austin: Since it's TX, no state and local income taxes. Property taxes are through the roof. Gorgeous city, great parks, almost non-stop nightlife, probably the friendliest and most laid-back of the four cities. -Louisville: Olmstead parks, reasonable cost of living. City is becoming more "hollowed" and ghetto. Nice countryside. I found the people to be very rude, closed, and impolite. However, it has a big bang for the buck. -Cincinnati: Ditto w/ Louisville. But, I LOVE Eden Park and Jungle Jim's! -Greensboro: High taxes, cost of living, everything! But very close to the Smokies and Shenendoahs. Currently live in Houston. Age 28, single, no girlfriend, love live music, friendly and outgoing! Thanks in advance! I should also point out that I lived in Louisville (actually, Hillview) for eight weeks. Hillview was tolerable at best, but I couldn't stand Louisville--because of the people. But, again, a nice apt. in a decent neighborhood still runs $450/mo.
Multi state taxes question? I have earned no (zero) income since moving here to CA from NC in October, besides getting a retirement account check that I paid into while living and working in NC. So do I even need to file a CA return?
W2 Question: Work for same company in FL and now in NC? Hope someone can help me here.....I worked in FL (where there was no state taxes) and moved in April of last year and work with the same company in NC. My W2 form has my income for the year and taxes withheld for NC....but I think I should have received a seperate W2 for when I was in FL right? Because while doing my taxes it says that I owe money to NC....which doesn't seem right at all..because taxes were atomatically deducted from my paycheck almost immediately once I started working here. Should I contact our HR office? Would they issue new W2's? Thanks!
File taxes in non-resident state for lottery winnings? I live and work in NC. I have lottery winnings from VA and recvd a form W-2G. I filed it on my federal taxes. But my question is, do I need to file a VA state return since the only income I had there is the lottery winnings?
Amend federal and state return? I e-filed my NC state return then I discovered a mistake when I printed out a hard copy...I accidentally put down the state income tax withheld from my paycheck as "other federal taxable income deductions," according to my state return. So the "state income tax withheld" block is left blank. I want to correct this. Does it mean I have to amend both my federal and state returns? I'm currently getting $97 back for my federal and owe the state $774, if that information helps any
Turbo Tax & Resident vs. non-resident states - 2007? I live in SC and work in NC, therefore all my income was in NC. My total income was ~66,000. TurboTax recommended I fill in the non-resident state first. I paid ~5,500 in NC state income tax, and that resulted in a 250 refund. Then, when I got to filling in SC, TurboTax came back and says I owe 3,500 to Sc. How can this be? Aren't I supposed to get some kind of credit for having paid NC all that money, when I don't live there? I've been living/working this arrangement for years, and have only ever owed SC no more than a few hundred or so. It just doesn't seem right that in total, I owe almost 14% of my salary to state income taxes! Is anyone aware of a potential bug in Turbo Taxes filing software regarding dual state filing? I've used TurboTax every year prior, with no issues. Am wondering when I went wrong?
Income tax help needed? I recently received a letter from the North Carolina Dept of revenue saying that I owe taxes for FY 2002. I sent them a copy of a transcript of my Federal 2002 taxes which showed a much lower amount of income than what NC dept of revenue shows. I thought state income taxes always went by what the IRS shows for income. What should I do next? I believe the state somehow made an error.
North Carolina State Income Tax 1099-G for 2006 in 2007? Hello: Few days back I received a mail (1099-G form - State Income Tax Refunds 2007) from the State Of North Carolina Dept. of Revenue that State Income tax refund, credit or offset: $1256.00 for the year 2006. This mail also has a fine print that "This statement is for information only and is not a bill nor is it a check." In 2006, I did live in NC and received exactly the same amount as refund while I filed for income tax for 2006 in 2007. In left NC sometime end of 2006 for FL. I never worked in NC in 2007. This is 2008 and time to file income tax for 2007. My question are, 1. What is this refund? 2. Can I include it for 2007 Income Tax? Please advise. Thanks. Tim
Should I be paying state income tax on unemployment benefits while not a resident of that state? I was resident of Texas for the full of 2010. I was resident of NC before moving to Texas until Sept 2009. I received unemployment benefits from the state of North Carolina in 2010. Do I need to pay state income tax on the unemployment benefits that I received from NC during 2010 ? Reason behind the question is that I was not a resident of NC while I received the Unemployment benefits and there is no state income tax in Texas....Thanks in advance 01/16/2011 - Some Additional Details Here is my Concern. While my employer is based in NC and have been paying taxes to NC while I was a resident of NC. After I moved permanently to Texas my employer stopped paying NC (and I had no NC taxes with hold from my paycheck from NC for 2010). So in a way although my income was from a company based in NC, since I was a resident of TX, I was not required to pay NC income taxes, which I think makes sense. So How is the unemployment benefits different from my regular NC income. ? Thanks again for taking time to answer my question
Question about state tax? I recently graduated college and started working. I've worked before, but never full time so I never really cared how much tax I was paying. But I have a question about something I dont understand. When you pay state tax (btw, I live in NC) does the state tax apply to your entire gross salary, or to your adjusted income on your federal tax return? For example (these are not real numbers) If you earned $1,000 in a year, but after your federal tax exemptions, your adjusted taxable income was $800. You pay federal tax on $800. What amount do you pay state tax on?

Do I need to report wages earned in NC on my VA income tax return? My husband works in NC and I work in VA. We are residents of VA. In 2006, my husband switched jobs; he had worked in VA until August 2006, then started a job in NC. Our tax prepaper only reported income earned in VA on our VA income tax return. Now, we have gotten a letter from the VA Dept of Taxation stating that we owe back taxes. I feel certain that it should have been reported since our legal residence is VA, but I was just wondering.
Tax Question - filing when working/living in different states? I live in SC & work in NC. My employer listed both NC & SC in box 15 on my W2 - with my total wages listed in box 16 for each state and the state income taxes paid - which was 0 for SC. Question: When using turbo tax - i'm asked to identify the source/resident type of both these income lines (SC & NC). Choices are. 1. Non-Resident - North Carolina Source Income 2. Not-North Carolina source income and 3. PY- North Carolina income - which is partial year resident not applicable to me. I'm not sure which to put for the SC line - please help. For NC line i put (1). By changing 1 or 2 - for SC - makes a huge difference to the taxes I owe to NC. Any help would be appreciated.
Am I resident for state tax purposes as international F1 student ? I am graduate student in NC since 2007. This year I had income from both NC and CA (internship). I am nonresident alien, so I filed 1040NR-EZ. But regarding state tax - am I resident or non-resident ? For residents, the state wants to tax all my income (NC+CA), and for non-residents - only NC - so that's a big difference to me. Please, cite your sources. thank you!

Reference Question from Yahoo answers: "What states do not tax federal retirement income?" What about NC? Does a list exist that accurately depicts those states that do not tax federal retirement income?
Question about state taxes.? I need help with my state taxes. I live in NC and work in SC. My Federal AGI is $10,113. My SC withholding is $755. My tax that needs to be paid to SC is $292.00. That gives me a refund of $463.00 The state of NC is saying my taxable income is $15,150. It's showing I owe $911 and am getting a credit of $392 and that I owe $519. Do these numbers sound right? It has never come up before that I had to pay NC. It has always come out that I get a refund from SC but do not owe NC. Have I entered something wrong?
which state tax? I live in SC but work at NC. NC withhold my state tax from wage. I also have some interest income from CDs, stock gain & lose, and the previous year state tax refund. Which portion of my income is taxable to NC and which is taxable to SC?
Do you have to give bank info to NC Dpt of Revenue representatives when making tax repayment arrangement? I recently called the NC Dept of Revenue to make arrangements to pay taxes that were delinquent due to mistakes on my income tax form. The representative wanted me to give her my bank account information. I asked her if she could first send me the papers stating that an arrangement has been made for me to pay these taxes before I give out my bank info. She said that she needed my bank account information BEFORE she could send me the papers. My question: Is this information needed prior to me receiving the papers? I do not like giving out my bank account number because I have been "burned" before and the person went into my account and took out money and they were a "legit" representative with this agency. So if you have any knowledge of NC Dept of Revenue procedures for paying back taxes, your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Do I need to file multiple state tax returns? I was a student in NC and received no income. I moved to FL for work in June. Do I need to file a return in NC for any reason?

Should I file tax jointly or separately? I moved from PA to NC in March 2006 and will marry in October 2006. I want to know if it is better to file tax jointly or separately next Spring (2007). - If I file tax jointly, will my husband's (-to-be at the moment) income be taxed in PA (my previously state) or will they only consider my earning from PA for PA state tax? - If I file tax separately, how do I deal with co-owned items like house or interest from savings accout? Will only one of us claim?
Is there a town, in the s.e. US, that is small, near mountains, great schools, and has a blue state mindset? I am an artist in FL, and I had hoped to move my family some day to northern GA, where my mom lives, my husband is Mexican, and I am white bread. To my horror, they held a KKK rally in the town square, and the community is very republican. Where can I take my family where I can find like minded people, open minds and open spaces, yet near cultural amenities? I hope i'm not offensive, but other towns near there had refused that opportunity for the rally, but its still too close for comfort. Tennessee is beautiful, NC as well as GA has a personal income tax, my husband is a finish carpenter, and needs to be near upscale homes and communities, but I prefer the country. He can drive to work, as he and I both are self employed. I just don't want anyone burning a cross in the yard. If I am agnostic, I want to live where nobody cares, and I don't have to broadcast it. Any ideas?
