State Income & Sales Taxes? Why is it that some states double dip? By this I mean some states have both income & sales tax where as other states have a higher sales tax rate but no state income tax. At least with the sales tax its your choice, either buy or don't by to controll how much you pay in state taxes.
How do state and federal income taxes work? I am 16, live in Michigan, and recently started working my first real job. On my most recent paycheck over half of it went to Federal Income taxes, State Income taxes, Social Security taxes, and Medicare taxes. Does this sound right?
How do state income taxes work when working in MI and living in TN? I recently moved from Michigan to Tennessee, and am continuing to work remotely for the same company. I understand that under normal circumstances, the two states would do some sort of weird mathematical equation behind the scenes to figure who gets how much tax on my income. How does this work in Tennessee, which has no state income tax on wages? Have I chosen poorly by moving to a state where sales tax is higher to help compensate for the lack of income tax, or will I get some sort of credit next year?
Are state income taxes based on the address of the employer or the employee? I worked in New York over the summer, but I'm a California resident, and I used my California address for all the paperwork, so that's the address listed on my W-2 (and also where all my paychecks were sent). I have to file tax returns for both states either way, but I'm not sure whether to list my summer pay as NY or CA income. Is what state my income was earned in determined by my employer's address, or by my address as listed on my W-2? If it's considered NY income, then do I file my CA tax return as a part-year resident, or will I have to CA tax on it as well?
Assuming the following is true, what is state income taxes used for? Property taxes generally fund your local school district and municipalities. Cities generally don't charge a sales tax but a 1-3% wage tax which they use to provide services in the city such as maintenance, police and civic services. Sales tax is generally collected on a state level and used to manage state services, courts, police and maintenance. Above came from another answer regarding the use of sales tax. So is the 1-3% wage tax this person is referring to, the state income tax? If so, why would that figure vary, the percentage I mean? Isn't that an apportioned tax? Why would each city vary the percentage?
Why not increase city & state income taxes & abolish property taxes? I would like to see property taxes abolished & a 2% city tax of personal income be charged along with an increase in state income taxes. Here, in North Dakota, our property tax is way out of line, while our state income tax is almost nill. Some people want to abolish the state income tax. This would only benefit the extremely wealthy & the large corporations. With the 2% city tax & the increase in state income tax, this should help fund our schools & provide services for the entire state.
State income taxes due.? My state income taxes are due on Apr 15th. Does that mean that they must recieve my payment by then or that it must be postmarked by then?
Can I still deduct state & local taxes like I have the past couple years? We have no state income tax in FL.? The past couple years I know I've been able to deduct a certain amount of taxes on a Schedule A (Itemized Deductions) line 5 for State and Local Income Taxes. If you don't have all your receipts they gave you a certain amount (from a table) based off your income. I've gone through my taxes online this year and I'm not finding where this same deduction is available? Has this item expired? Or am I missing something? Anyone done their Federal Income taxes for 2007 found this to be true? Thanks! (Obviously we don't pay state income tax in FL.) PS - I'm using H&R Block TaxCut...and I've gone through it several times and it's not coming up! I used this product last year and it worked fine. This year I'm starting to worry!
state income taxes? I work for the home office in Denver, Co. they loaned my out to the Greenville, Sc office for 7 months. They I was on loan to the Knoxville, Tn office for 2 months. While working in Knoxville they continioued to take out SC taxes. How do I fille my state taxes so I can get back the taxes paid to SC that are are not due to them?
Do I owe Louisiana state income tax? I moved from Louisiana to Texas in August of 2005. Louisiana is requiring that I pay state taxes on income that my wife and I earned after we moved to Texas (which does not have state income tax). My question is: Why is Louisiana able to tax what I earned in Texas and do I actually owe them money? Should I fight them on this subject?
Do you have to pay pennsylvania state income tax if you are on Medicaid ? My Mother is in a nursing home and was approved for Medicaid in November 2007. Prior to November, she sold off all her mutual funds to pay for her long term care. Now, it looks like she needs to pay Pennsylvania state taxes from the mutual fund sales. She has virtually no assets; that is why she is on Medicaid. Doesn't make sense that PA would approve her for Medicaid but now expect her to pay income tax.
Is there serious discussion underway in yr state re: significantly reducing or eliminating state income taxes? I understand this to be the case in both Georgia and North Carolina as these two states attempt to support the continued rapid growth of their economies. Is there any discussion that you're aware of by responsible parties in your state? In my state, NH, there has been a longstanding push to institute an income tax. With Democrats now in charge of both houses of the legislature as well as the governorship, I expect that this effort will continue with renewed vigor. One reason I and many others like me came to this state was because it's in dead-last place in terms of total taxation - personal, corporate, estate, etc. This has resulted in a relatively small state government focused on basic requirements (health, welfare, safety, roads, air & water) instead of the one I had in California that spent most of its time looking for ways to raise more money to spend. The purpose of my question is to identify states that are moving in the right direction in case I decide to relocate. I know some of you disagree with my position vis-a-vis state income taxes. Feel free to express your disagreement. All that I ask is that you keep it civil - otherwise, as per the usual, you will be reported.
State Taxes with Income from Indiana and Ohio? I earned around 4000 dollars working in Ohio, then I went to school in Indiana. At school I earned about 100 dollars as a note taker. I'm pretty sure I don't pay Ohio taxes on the money I earned in Indiana, but my Ohio tax form just asks for my federal adjusted gross income and has no place to account for income earned in a different state. How do I resolve this?
Is CASDI also considered part of state income taxes? Can I add the CASDI (box 14 on my W-2) to the total amount on state tax withheld (box 17 on my W-2) and put the total on form 540 (CA Tax Return) in line 36? After all that's some type of tax that I am paying, right? Shouldn't that be part of the total state tax withheld? I paid $216 during the tax year and it would make a big difference if that could be part of state taxes withheld, my return would result in a refund, instead of owing the FTB of California.
Multiple-state income taxes? I have a web & graphic design business in California, but I also received income from clients in Colorado, Idaho and Oregon last year. All of these states have income taxes, but I'm not sure if I have to file returns in all of them, or just in California. I did receive 1099-MISC forms from each of these clients.
New York State Income Taxes? Why does it take so darn long for New York Income Tax Refunds...we file our taxes on February 2, 2007 and still haven't heard or received anything from these people..
State income taxes, Form 1099-div and 1099-b?? I filed my 2005 taxes with Turbotax (NEVER AGAIN!!) and received a letter last week from Missouri that they had never been filed... I thought Turbotax had taken care of that, but anyway, now I have to go back and file my taxes. I have a form 1099-DIV Dividends and Distributions and 1099-B Proceeds from Broker & Barter Exchange Transactions that I received from an account that I closed. I had to report this for my federal taxes, but do I have to on my Missouri taxes? And if so, where is that place on the form 1040?
If Americans are free, why does our government ask us for protection money (state & federal income taxes)? We all know if you don't pay state & federal income taxes, they can take away your freedom by putting you in prison for income tax evasion! You might say the taxes are for running our government. If they were to run our country the right way, they wouldn't need our money. If its for fighting wars, its wasted money, plus, the most powerful nation in the world doesn't need to fight overseas to prove a point. Other taxes are alright! The above is for a theisis I have to write! What's your valued opinion?
